Neuza Azevedo
Description
Neuza Azevedo was a Brazilian voice actress with a prolific career in dubbing, particularly active from the 1970s until her retirement around 2010. Born in São Paulo on June 19, 1943, she initially pursued training in dramatic arts at the ART school under actress Vida Alves and worked as an actress in television and radio before transitioning to voice acting. She began her dubbing career in the early 1970s at the Arte Industrial Cinematográfica (AIC) studio in São Paulo.
Azevedo contributed her voice to numerous anime and animated series. She is known for her role as Marie in the 1967 anime Ogon Bat, where she provided the second voice for the character in the São Paulo studio dubbing. She also voiced the role of Mãe de Esopo (Aesop's Mother) in the series Manga Aesop Monogatari. Her other notable anime and animation work includes Miyabi in Crystal Triangle, Judy Jetson in the second and third seasons of The Jetsons, Trixie in a VHS dubbing of Speed Racer, and the voice of Chris's mother in an episode of Superbook. Her work extended to tokusatsu live-action series, where she voiced characters such as Sayaka Nagisa / Change Mermaid in Changeman and the villain Purima in Jaspion.
In addition to her work in Japanese productions, Azevedo was a prominent voice for many Hollywood actresses in Brazilian Portuguese versions of live-action films. Among her most recognized roles are Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Lorraine Baines (Lea Thompson) in the original dubbing of the Back to the Future trilogy, and Carol Connelly (Helen Hunt) in As Good as It Gets. She also served as a dubbing director on some projects in the 2000s. In 2003, her significant contributions to the field were recognized with the Troféu Anime Dreams, a lifetime achievement award presented at the Prêmio Yamato. Neuza Azevedo passed away on August 2, 2020.
