Bernard Tiphaine was a French actor and director who became one of the most recognized voices in French dubbing, lending his talents to numerous animated series and films. Born in Paris on July 29, 1938, he began his career in live-action film and theatre before becoming extensively active in dubbing.
His voice work in animation was prolific. He is indeed the French voice of Charlie in the series Smart-san and also provided the narration for the show. He voiced the character Chamo in New Maple Town Stories. He took on the role of the adventurous Englishman Philéas Fogg in the Spanish-Japanese animated series Around the World with Willy Fog. In the anime adaptation of Little Women, he voiced the role of Père, the patriarch of the March family.
Beyond these specific roles, Tiphaine's animation voice credits were extensive and varied. He was the voice of Bender in the first three seasons of the French dub of Futurama, as well as the narrator and Lord Alwine in Robin Hood, and several characters in The Rose of Versailles, including Bernard Châtelet and Nicolas de la Motte. He also voiced characters in series such as Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken, Adventures of the Little Mermaid, and Samurai Pizza Cats. For Disney and Pixar, he is well-known as the voice of Anton Ego in Ratatouille and Dr. Finkelstein in The Nightmare Before Christmas.
