Richard Newman is an American-born voice, film, and television actor based in Canada, with a prolific career in animation that began around 1990. He is widely recognized for his extensive work in English dubs of anime and for his roles in numerous Western animated series.
Newman has portrayed a wide array of characters across many notable anime series. He is known for his role as President McMillan in the series Oban Star-Racers. His other prominent anime voice roles include Cale, also known as Anubis, in Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors); Maruten in Project A-ko: Uncivil Wars; and Tōtōsai the sword-smith in the Inuyasha franchise. He was also the voice of Vector Prime in Transformers: Cybertron and provided the voice of Megatron for a single episode of Transformers: Energon.
In addition to these roles, Newman has a significant history with English dubs produced in Canada. He was the narrator and voiced multiple characters, including Sebastian, Ebenezer Scrooge, Long John Silver, and Captain Nemo, in the various segments of the anthology series Funky Fables. His other prolific anime credits include roles in the Ocean Group dub of Dragon Ball Z as Captain Ginyu and Oolong, and as Emperor Dornkirk in The Vision of Escaflowne.
Newman is perhaps best known for his work outside of anime, particularly his leading role as Rhinox in the iconic CGI series Beast Wars: Transformers. He has collaborated frequently with a core group of Vancouver-based voice actors, including Scott McNeil, Garry Chalk, and David Kaye, on numerous projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s. His career also includes significant stage work; he was nominated for a Jessie Award for his performance as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and has taken on the title role in productions of King Lear.
