Born in Toronto, Canada, she began her professional acting career as a teenager, performing in theater and taking improv classes. One of her first major voice-over roles, at the age of 13, was providing the voice for the title character in the 1987 animated series Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater, where she was credited under her birth name, Tara Charendoff.
