Eric Missoffe
Description
A French voice actor with a career spanning several decades, Eric Missoffe is a prolific comedian whose work has become familiar to generations of anime and animation fans in France. He initially trained at a conservatory and began his artistic career performing in theater, taking on classical roles as well as contemporary works. His entry into the world of dubbing came in 1985 when he was selected by Egyptian director Youssef Chahine to provide a voice for the film Adieu Bonaparte, a experience he has described as very impressive due to working with such a renowned director and actor Michel Piccoli.
In the field of Japanese anime, Eric Missoffe has portrayed a wide range of memorable characters. He is the voice of the cunning and flamboyant warlord Donquixote Doflamingo in the long-running series One Piece, a role he has said he greatly enjoyed for its unhinged nature. He voiced the character Becker in the acclaimed science fiction series Pluto. In the psychological thriller Paranoia Agent, he took on the role of the determined detective Mitsuhiro Maniwa. He gave his voice to Iggy, the android companion to the protagonist in the cyberpunk series Ergo Proxy. He portrayed the mysterious and otherworldly Comte D in the gothic horror series Pet Shop of Horrors. More recently, he was cast as Guen, the loyal and observant assistant to the Empress Dowager, in the historical drama The Apothecary Diaries.
Outside of anime, Eric Missoffe is widely recognized for his work on several major international franchises. He is most famously the French voice of the beloved Great Dane Scooby-Doo, a role he has held since 1990, and also voices Scooby's human companion, Sammy Rogers. He has voiced characters in the Harry Potter film series, including Professor Flitwick and the goblin Griphook. His work also includes dubbing Noah Wyle as Dr. John Carter on the medical drama ER throughout the show's entire run, as well as providing voices for shows like South Park and Garfield.
He has noted that his approach to dubbing animation allows for more creative freedom than live-action dubbing, which often requires a closer imitation of the original actor's performance. By contrast, he has described video game voice acting as much more restrictive, often performed without proper context for the lines. Regarding his preferences as a viewer, he has stated that he personally prefers to watch films and series in their original version. He has also spoken about the challenging pace of modern dubbing, particularly for streaming platforms like Netflix, which he has compared to factory work due to the high speed required. In his career, he has worked with studios such as Studio Chinkel and Iyuno France.
