His stage name, Kinryu, originated from a common misreading of his given name's kanji, which he adopted and continued to use throughout his career.
Arimoto's path to performance began after moving to Tokyo, where he became a founding member of the Baraza theater company, encouraged by the actor Nachi Nozawa. He dropped out of Waseda University to focus on his craft, making his professional stage debut in his mid-twenties. This theatrical foundation led to a career that spanned over five decades, during which he was active in both stage and voice acting from 1963 until 2018. He was affiliated with several talent agencies over the years, including Production Baobab and later Hirano Kikaku. Beyond his professional life, he held the rank of shodan (black belt) in kenpo.

In the 1990s, he voiced characters like Bogard in Tekkaman Blade, Freddie in Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, Dr. Raizo Kasshu in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, and Marquis Weridge and Master Winner in Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. He also provided voices for In the Beginning: The Bible Stories as Adam, and appeared in series like Trigun and You're Under Arrest!.
In the 2000s and 2010s, he continued to take on prominent roles. He was the voice of Ken Kogashiwa in Initial D Third Stage and Admiral Hibiki in the Inazuma Eleven: Saikyō Gundan Ogre Shūrai film. He played Hajime Wataya in Chihayafuru, Eddie Jay in Space Brothers and its film Space Brothers #0, and Isshin Matoi in Kill la Kill. One of his most recognized later roles was Tomomi Masaoka in the Psycho-Pass series, a part he reprised for the film Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System - Case.2: First Guardian. Other credits include roles in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, and citrus.
Arimoto was also highly active in the field of Japanese dubbing for live-action films and television series. He became the go-to voice actor for several major Hollywood stars, including Christopher Walken, Jeremy Irons, and Jonathan Banks. His extensive dubbing work includes providing the Japanese voice for Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Carl Manfred in Detroit: Become Human, and roles in films such as Kingdom of Heaven, Interstellar, and the Star Wars series.
His final years saw him continue working despite health challenges. He battled esophageal cancer and passed away ten days before his 79th birthday. The second Psycho-Pass SS film, released shortly after his death, stands as one of his final performances. His legacy is marked by his deep, resonant voice and the wide array of characters he brought to life across both animation and live-action dubbing, with many of his iconic roles later being taken on by other actors in his honor.
