Ryōko Kinomiya

Ryōko Kinomiya was a Japanese voice actress, narrator, and actress. Born Ryōko Sakurai on July 10, 1931, she began her career in 1951 and remained active until her passing on November 25, 2013, at the age of 82. Over six decades, she became known for her distinctive, low-register voice.

Kinomiya's extensive voice acting career encompassed numerous iconic anime series and films. In the Galaxy Express 999 franchise, she voiced the character Promethium (also known as Queen Promethium) in both the original television series and the theatrical films Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999. She also lent her voice to Madame du Barry in the classic historical drama The Rose of Versailles. Her other notable anime roles include Aya Mifune (the mother of the title character) in Speed Racer, the Grand Master of Witches in Tweeny Witches, Himiko in Phoenix, and Night Wind in The Fantastic Adventures of Unico. In addition to these character roles, she was a prolific narrator for anime, providing narration for series such as Queen Millennia, Sukeban Deka II and III, Jigoku Sensei Nube (Hell Teacher Nūbē), Tenamonya Voyagers, and also performed narration duties for the series Saint Young Men.

Beyond anime, Kinomiya was highly respected for her work in dubbing foreign films. She was the regular Japanese voice actress for American actress Faye Dunaway and also provided dubbing for actresses such as Maureen O'Hara and Jane Russell. Her signature delivery style in narration became so well-known that it earned the nickname Kinomiya-bushi, or the Kinomiya style.

In recognition of her long and influential career, Kinomiya received the Merit Award at the 2nd Seiyu Awards in 2008. She was also a founding member of the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society, also known as Haikyō, which she helped establish in 1960. Her final work included narration for the series Saint Young Men, which was released in 2013, the same year as her death. For her lasting contributions, she was posthumously awarded the Special Achievement Award at the 8th Seiyu Awards in 2014.
