Description
In the third installment of the Sukeban Deka television series, the story abandons its earlier urban crime drama roots for a supernatural fantasy narrative. The protagonist is Yui Kazama, a spirited young woman from the countryside of Kyushu, who is recruited by a mysterious figure known as the Dark Director to become the third operative to carry the code name Saki Asamiya. Instead of the traditional yo-yo of her predecessors, Yui is trained in the arts of a kunoichi, a female ninja, and her primary weapon becomes a powerful, high-tech yo-yo suited for this new brand of mystical combat. Her mission is to travel to Tokyo and confront a formidable supernatural terrorist known only as the Emperor, who poses a unique and otherworldly threat to society.
Upon arriving in Tokyo, Yui is reunited with her long-lost sisters, Yuka and Yuma, and the three form a trio of delinquent ninja warriors fighting against the Emperor’s forces. They are aided in their quest by an elderly, wise mentor figure named Yoda and a bodyguard named Leia, whose names and roles are clear stylistic homages to characters from Star Wars. The series shifts from the realistic, gritty school settings of previous entries to a more fantastical landscape filled with psychic powers and secret ninja clans. The narrative arc takes a dramatic turn when it is revealed that the Emperor is actually the sisters' own father, a man of immense psychic power who has turned to evil. Furthermore, Yui discovers she has a twin sister who has been brainwashed by her father to serve as his loyal agent, forcing the siblings into a tragic confrontation with their own family. The series ran for 42 episodes and, unlike its more popular predecessor, struggled to maintain its audience, leading to its conclusion after this single, self-contained storyline.
