Masashi Ishibashi

Description
Masashi Ishibashi was a Japanese actor born on January 4, 1933, in Hualien City, Taiwan, who passed away on December 19, 2018, at the age of 85. While his career included voice work, he was primarily a live-action actor, renowned for his extensive and memorable roles in tokusatsu productions, which are live-action special effects films and television series. He was particularly celebrated for his portrayals of iconic villains and antagonists throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Ishibashi’s career was deeply intertwined with some of Japan’s most famous franchises. In the long-running Super Sentai series, he played a succession of formidable enemy commanders, starting with the role of Iron Claw in J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai. He later portrayed Commander Hedder in Battle Fever J and General Kar of the Jashinka Empire in Kagaku Sentai Dynaman. He also appeared as Dr. Lehda in Kousoku Sentai Turboranger.

His contributions to the Kamen Rider series were equally significant. In the original 1971 Kamen Rider series, he appeared as Combatman No. 3. He played Gosuke Saruwatari, the human form of the monster Fire Kong, in the first two episodes of Kamen Rider Super-1. He also took on the role of Saburo Takasugi in an episode of Kamen Rider BLACK. Beyond these famous superhero franchises, Ishibashi had a substantial career in jidaigeki, or period dramas, appearing in series such as Mito Komon and playing Kaze no Gennai in the live-action adaptation of Lone Wolf and Cub. He also played the role of Master Tengu in Sukeban Deka III: Shōjo Ninpōchō Denki.

In film, Ishibashi is well-remembered for his role as the vicious karate master Tateki Shikenbaru, the primary antagonist in the classic martial arts films The Street Fighter and Return of the Street Fighter, both starring Sonny Chiba. A skilled martial artist himself, Ishibashi held high ranks in both Goju-ryu and Kyokushin karate, which lent authenticity to his many action roles.
