Ryō Ishihara

Ryō Ishihara was a Japanese voice actor and narrator known for his work in anime from the 1960s through the 1990s. His real name was Toshiyuki Fujii, and he was born on March 31, 1931, in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Throughout his career, he was affiliated with the talent management agency Aoni Production.

Ishihara is best known for his role as Jet Link, the speedster designated Cyborg 002, in the Cyborg 009 franchise. He first voiced the character in the original 1966 theatrical film and reprised the role for the 1967 film Cyborg 009 and the Monster Wars, as well as the 1968 television anime series. Decades later, he returned to the franchise as the narrator for the 1980 film Cyborg 009: Legend of the Super Galaxy.

Beyond his signature role in Cyborg 009, Ishihara frequently worked as a narrator for several anime features and series. He served as the narrator for the television series Space Carrier Blue Noah, the 1980 animated film Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned, the 1982 science fiction film Future War 198X, and the 1994 anime film Sangokushi: Harukanaru Daichi. His other notable voice roles included Akira Yamabe in the original 1966 Sally the Witch, Atlantar in Yuusei Kamen, Seiichi Shima in the sports anime Kyoujin no Hoshi, and Zhang Zhao in the theatrical Sangokushi film trilogy. He also performed in dubbed versions of foreign productions, providing the Japanese voice for Jim Rose on the television series The F.B.I., and worked on puppet shows such as Supercar and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. In radio dramas, he played Soldier Blue and the narrator for Toward the Terra.

Ryō Ishihara passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 94 due to heart failure. His career spanned several decades, leaving a legacy primarily defined by his work on the foundational science fiction anime series Cyborg 009.
