The story follows a lonely boy who lives quietly in a housing complex in Sendai, where he endures constant bullying. His life changes with the arrival of a transfer student, and a chance encounter leads him to dream of becoming an idol, following in the footsteps of his absent father. The narrative unfolds over the course of the protagonists hundred-year life, during which he is known by many names including derogatory insults and stage names but his real name is never spoken.

The story moves from the protagonists childhood in northern Japan to the vibrant J-pop world of Tokyos Harajuku district, and eventually extends into a post-apocalyptic future.
