Description
The story follows a lonely boy who lives quietly in a housing complex in Sendai, where he endures constant bullying. His life changes with the arrival of a transfer student, and a chance encounter leads him to dream of becoming an idol, following in the footsteps of his absent father. The narrative unfolds over the course of the protagonists hundred-year life, during which he is known by many names including derogatory insults and stage names but his real name is never spoken.
The film is structured in ten chapters, chronicling his unexpected rise to fame and the beautiful yet sorrowful journey of a man who unintentionally becomes a public figure. The story moves from the protagonists childhood in northern Japan to the vibrant J-pop world of Tokyos Harajuku district, and eventually extends into a post-apocalyptic future. Woven into this personal story are several contemporary social issues, including the dark side of the entertainment industry, the problem of elderly drivers, the unknown deaths of young people, and the lingering shadows of war.
Key characters in this narrative include the protagonist voiced by rapper ACE COOL, alongside figures such as Kin, Hiroshi, Hime, and others who populate his world. The film was created by independent director Ryuya Suzuki, who worked for a year and a half as the sole creator handling direction, animation, art direction, character design, editing, and music composition. The journey begins in 1994 with an opening montage of taxi rides, requiring close attention to subtleties as the story accelerates through a century of lived experience, exploring themes of life and death, fate and rebellion, power and powerlessness.
