Description
No live-action television series titled Teito Monogatari Gaiden appears to exist based on available information. However, a live-action film of the same name was released in 1995 as a direct-to-video production.
The story takes place in 1995 in Tokyo, where a mental hospital has been built near the grave of the legendary warrior Taira no Masakado. The facility is located close to the Japanese Ministry of Finance, and within its walls works a young male nurse named Jin'ya Yanase. Yanase has developed an obsessive fascination with the legend of Taira no Masakado, but his obsession focuses specifically on the spirit of Masakado's evil subordinate, the onmyoji and demon-god Yasunori Kato. Over time, Yanase becomes possessed by Kato's spirit, which seeks to use the nurse as a new host body to return to the modern world.
Opposing this threat is Keiko Tatsumiya, the heroine from the original Teito Monogatari story. Now an elderly homeless woman living on the streets of Tokyo, she has long since abandoned her former life. However, when she senses the malevolent presence of Yasunori Kato resurfacing, she must find the strength and resolve to confront the demon-god once more and banish his spirit permanently.
The film serves as a spin-off of the larger Teito Monogatari franchise, though it is not directly adapted from Hiroshi Aramatas original novel. Instead, it draws from a side story novel titled Karakuri Doshi, which is set in contemporary times. The production is notably darker, more violent, and more sexually explicit than previous entries in the series, and it deviates considerably from its source material. Directed by Izo Hashimoto from a screenplay by Rika Yamagami, the film runs approximately 89 minutes and was marketed as a direct sequel to the 1988 film Tokyo: The Last War.
