Description
A woman in her early thirties returns to her provincial hometown of Kanazawa after five years abroad, accompanied by her husband and young son. Noriko had once been determined to escape an ordinary life, studying in Tokyo and building a career before marriage and motherhood. Yet coming home stirs an unexpected sense of emptiness, forcing her to confront choices made and paths not taken. A man from her past reappears, holding a secret that connects directly to her.
This is the opening story of Otona Joshi no Anime Time, an anthology series of four short films that aired on NHK between 2011 and 2013. Each episode adapts a prize-winning short story by a different female author, offering a standalone glimpse into the lives of women navigating the quiet complications of adulthood in contemporary Japan. The series moves away from fantasy and youth-oriented narratives to focus on more grounded, everyday struggles.
In the second episode, a woman named Mimi finds herself trapped in a loveless, arranged marriage as she approaches her thirties. Her small act of rebellion begins with a chance encounter with Kou, a cheerful young garbage collector. Leaving her family behind, Mimi moves in with him, rediscovering joy in simple acts like cooking a meal for someone who appreciates it. Her new happiness, however, is shadowed by the judgment of her family and society, forcing her to question whether personal fulfillment is worth the cost.
The third story follows Hatoko, a businesswoman on the verge of her fortieth birthday. To cope with a sense of a life unlived, she drinks whiskey each night and mentally lists the best ten moments of her existence. She is dismayed to realize that all of them occurred before she turned eighteen. Invited to a middle school reunion, she eagerly hopes to reconnect with Yusaku Kishida, the boy who gave her her first kiss. The night that follows is a bittersweet collision of memory, fantasy, and reality, leading to an encounter that is both unexpectedly romantic and quietly absurd.
The final episode centers on Maho, a 43-year-old housewife whose life has become an invisible grind. With her husband recently fired from his job and now earning less, she works the late shift at a supermarket to support the family. Her teenage daughter is frequently absent, her college-aged son is distant and dismissive, and her elderly mother offers only nagging complaints. Maho gives everything she has, yet no one seems to notice. As the pressure mounts, she reaches a breaking point and makes a quiet but radical decision to reclaim a small piece of her own life.
Across these four narratives, Otona Joshi no Anime Time explores themes of regret, longing, the weight of social expectation, and the search for identity outside of roles like wife, mother, or daughter. The settings are ordinary homes, supermarkets, local bars, and reunion halls, the mundane landscapes where internal crises unfold. Each protagonist is at a different stage of life, from late twenties to early forties, yet all share a common struggle: the effort to see themselves clearly and to find a moment of genuine feeling in lives defined by routine and obligation.
