Description
The live-action film Shonan Junaigumi! Bad Company focuses on the formative days of legendary delinquents Eikichi Onizuka and Ryuji Danma before they became the infamous Onibaku duo. Set in the rough-and-tumble streets of Shonan, the story serves as a prequel, showing how these two fierce rivals first crossed paths and formed an unlikely bond. The narrative follows Ryuji Danma, a hot-headed and powerful brawler who has just transferred to a new middle school. On his first day, he witnesses a brutal fight won by a wild-eyed, blood-soaked boy named Eikichi Onizuka. Haunted by the feral look in Onizuka’s eyes, Ryuji becomes obsessed with provoking him into an all-out battle to determine who is truly the strongest. To his surprise, he discovers that Onizuka is not only in the same school but in his same class. However, every attempt to goad the carefree Onizuka into a serious fight fails, as Onizuka is far more interested in having fun with his friends and pursuing girls than engaging in meaningless power struggles.
Through a mutual friend, Sakura Yamato, Ryuji begins to see a different side of his rival. He is introduced to Onizuka’s inner circle, including the loyal friends Fukitoshi and Isami, who are rebuilding a broken-down motorcycle they found in a dump. Reluctantly drawn into their world, Ryuji helps fix the bike, a Kawasaki Z400GP that will become Onizuka’s signature ride. However, before they can enjoy their work, the bike is stolen by a local gang known as the Skulls, who beat the younger boys to steal the newly repaired machine. Setting aside their personal grudge, Ryuji joins Onizuka in a furious assault to reclaim what is theirs. Their fight draws the attention of the legendary biker gang, the Midnight Angels, whose leader, Masaki, becomes a role model for the young delinquents.
In the second part of the film, the focus shifts to Ryuji as he faces a dangerous adult world. After being locked out of his home, he encounters a mysterious and alluring older woman named Natsuki. Intrigued by her maturity and freedom, Ryuji ends up staying at her apartment, where she gives him her old Honda CBX motorcycle. His fascination turns to obsession, but he soon discovers Natsuki is entangled with a violent yakuza boyfriend, Nezu Akira, who beats her and extorts Ryuji. Pushed to his breaking point, Ryuji decides to kill Nezu, leading to a brutal confrontation that ends with Natsuki stabbing her abuser to protect the young boy. As Natsuki is taken away by the police, she asks Ryuji to wait for her so they can ride together again. Directed by Noboru Matsui and released in 1998, the film chronicles the violent births of Onizuka’s and Ryuji’s legendary reputations and the acquisition of the motorcycles that would define their youth. The narrative weaves between street brawls and teenage angst, showing how mutual respect, rather than hatred, formed the foundation of their enduring partnership. While the film captures the essential origin story from the manga, specific detailed plot information about the live-action version is not extensively documented.
