Description
"Ehrgeiz" is a 1997 anime series that blends elements of science fiction, action, and drama. The story is set in a dystopian future where humanity has colonized space, and the narrative revolves around a group of individuals competing in a deadly tournament known as the Ehrgeiz. The tournament is organized by a powerful corporation called the Ehrgeiz Foundation, which promises the winner immense wealth and the fulfillment of any wish. However, the true nature of the competition is far more sinister, as it serves as a means for the Foundation to test and exploit advanced humanoid weapons.

The protagonist, Ken, is a skilled fighter who enters the tournament to uncover the truth behind his brother's mysterious death. Along the way, he forms alliances with other participants, including a mysterious woman named Claire and a young boy named J.J., who possesses unique abilities. As the tournament progresses, it becomes clear that the Foundation is using the competitors as pawns in a larger scheme involving genetic engineering and the creation of superhuman soldiers.

The plot delves into themes of power, corruption, and the ethical implications of scientific advancement. The characters are driven by personal motivations, ranging from revenge to the desire for freedom, and their interactions reveal the complexities of their individual struggles. The narrative builds tension through a series of intense battles and strategic confrontations, culminating in a confrontation with the Foundation's leadership and the revelation of their ultimate plans.

The series explores the consequences of unchecked ambition and the moral dilemmas faced by those who seek to challenge oppressive systems. The characters' development is intertwined with the unfolding mystery of the Ehrgeiz Foundation's true intentions, creating a layered and engaging storyline. The anime's pacing balances action sequences with moments of introspection, providing a comprehensive exploration of its central themes and character dynamics.

1Coming from beyond the Space
An unidentified civilian transport ship comes under attack. The Next Alliance military suspects the autonomous weapon known as S.A.C.,or "S," carried out the assault. Colonel Akane Aoi, tasked with recovering S.A.C., defies concerns from her superiors and brings the cyborg Arnold into the operation. Arnold previously participated in S.A.C. development, an endeavor that cost him his original body. The militant organization Terra senses the re-emergence of what its leader Hal believes to be a great power. Hal, a psychic, extends his telepathic reach into space searching for the weapon. Meanwhile, a group of outcasts live independently on the abandoned colony known as Next 7, survivors of a previous battle who have no allegiance to the major factions. Their remote existence begins to show signs of collapse as the three main powers—Next, the Earth Government forces, and Terra—all move to locate the missing S.A.C. Akane places Arnold on the front lines, leveraging his unique connection to the weapon they hunt. Hal's obsession with the entity he senses grows, pushing Terra toward a confrontation. The quiet life on Next 7 faces its first disruption as the hunt for the autonomous weapon draws the colony's residents unknowingly into the larger conflict. The episode establishes the competing missions of the military commander, the psychic revolutionary, and the colony survivors, setting all three on a direct course toward the rogue S.A.C.
