Description
"La Maison en Petits Cubes" is a 12-minute animated short film that explores themes of memory, time, and the passage of life through the perspective of an elderly man living in a flooded town. The protagonist resides in a house constructed of small cubes, each level representing a different era of his life. As the water level rises, he is forced to build upward, adding new layers to his home. One day, he accidentally drops his pipe into the lower levels of the house and dons a diving suit to retrieve it. During his descent, he revisits the submerged floors, each of which triggers memories of significant moments from his past.
The narrative unfolds non-linearly, with the man’s journey through the house serving as a metaphor for his journey through life. Each floor corresponds to a different stage, from his childhood to adulthood, including memories of family, love, loss, and the passage of time. The lower levels, submerged in water, represent earlier periods, while the upper levels symbolize the present and future. The man’s interactions with objects and spaces within the house evoke poignant recollections, such as his relationship with his wife, the birth of his daughter, and the gradual changes in his surroundings as the town floods over the years.
The film’s protagonist is a solitary figure, reflecting on the quiet accumulation of life’s experiences. His memories are depicted with a sense of nostalgia and introspection, emphasizing the universal nature of aging and the inevitability of change. The story is conveyed with minimal dialogue, relying instead on visual storytelling and subtle emotional cues to communicate its themes. The flooded town and the layered house serve as central symbols, illustrating the interplay between memory, time, and the enduring impact of personal history. The narrative concludes with the man returning to the present, having reconnected with his past, and continuing to build upward, suggesting an ongoing cycle of life and memory.
