Description
Starscream served as Air Commander of the Energon Seekers, Cybertron's elite aerial warriors, before the war. He maintained neutrality, overseeing an orbital facility that produced Dark Energon but prohibiting its use due to safety concerns. His ambition focused on recovering the Matrix of Leadership to become a Prime and restore Cybertron's Golden Age, leading him to join Megatron's rebellion. However, he saw Megatron's anti-caste rhetoric as a facade for power lust and later resented the Decepticon leader's obsession with dominance.

Early in the war, Starscream guarded Sentinel Prime at Altihex Casino. When Decepticons attacked, Sentinel's cowardice prompted Starscream to redirect his Seekers to deliver the Prime to Kaon Prison instead of Iacon, gaining Megatron's interest. Starscream remained cautious, stationing Seekers at Moon Base One and Trypticon Station while selling their military services to Megatron. Megatron discovered Trypticon housed Dark Energon and, defying Starscream's warnings, forcibly accessed it. Witnessing Megatron control the substance, Starscream pledged allegiance to the Decepticons, betraying his neutral post.

Starscream later contacted Optimus Prime, probing potential rewards if Megatron were removed. He freed Sentinel Prime, offering redemption for the latter's past cowardice, intending to broker peace with Optimus and become Prime himself. This plan failed when Megatron mortally wounded Sentinel. Starscream retrieved the Key of Power from the Hall of Justice but was prevented from taking the Key of Justice from Sentinel's body by Blackout. After a stalemate fight with Megatron, he was spared for his combat value.

His relationship with Dark Energon evolved. Initially opposing its use, he embraced it when Megatron ordered him to down Omega Supreme in exchange for more substance. Starscream's forces succeeded, enabling Megatron to corrupt Cybertron's core. As the planet became uninhabitable, Starscream pursued the Ark aboard Trypticon (now the Nemesis warship), though both vessels separated during space bridge transit.

During the Battle of Iacon, Starscream frequently defied Megatron. He refused to deploy Dark Energon bombers, claiming ownership of the ships, and prematurely declared himself Decepticon leader when assuming Megatron died fighting Omega Supreme. Megatron later ordered him to attack Omega, threatening death for retreat. Starscream later ambushed and captured Optimus Prime under Iacon's ruins, gloating until Megatron blasted him. When Metroplex crushed Megatron, Starscream seized command again but proved incompetent, wasting resources on self-glorifying monuments and broadcasts. He imprisoned dissenters and abandoned a mission to reclaim energon from the Autobots, arresting the Combaticons despite their partial success. During his coronation, Megatron returned, reclaimed leadership, and exiled him.

Seeking revenge, Starscream approached Grimlock in Shockwave's lab, offering freedom in exchange for servitude. Grimlock rejected him violently, throwing him into a console. Later, on Earth, Starscream captured Arcee and Cliffjumper, seeking to decode an Autobot transmission. After torture failed, he took them to Shockwave for cortical psychic patch extraction. The process revealed Optimus Prime's location on Earth, but Arcee and Cliffjumper overpowered him and destroyed the space bridge. As Megatron's temporary successor on Earth, Starscream established an energon mine. When Vehicons captured Cliffjumper, Starscream murdered him by piercing his spark chamber, ordering the body disposed of. He later tracked Arcee for assassination but was thwarted by Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.

Throughout, Starscream displayed volatile traits: strategic brilliance mixed with panic, cowardice, and bombastic gestures. His scheming remained transparent to Megatron, who tolerated it as both a challenge to stay sharp and a perverse amusement. Starscream's mutant spark allowed his consciousness to persist beyond physical destruction in some continuities.
