Description
Conny Springer is a native of the rural Ragako village, located within the southern district of Wall Rose. His background is that of a simple villager who enlisted in the military with the practical goal of joining the Military Police Brigade, hoping to secure a comfortable life that would make his family proud and prove wrong those who mocked his small stature. He graduated as the eighth-ranked cadet of the 104th Training Corps, a placement that reflected his significant physical talents, particularly his agility and balance, rather than his intellectual abilities. His early demeanor is defined by an outgoing and impetuous personality, often displaying a naive enthusiasm and even a self-proclaimed "genius" attitude. He enjoys goofing around with his friends, especially Sasha Blouse, and is known for making simple mistakes, such as getting the military salute wrong on his first day. However, this lighthearted exterior masks a fundamental lack of judgment and a slow processing speed that often leads to mistakes in tactical situations.

As the story progresses, Conny's primary motivations evolve significantly from personal ambition to a deep-seated need to protect his loved ones and seek understanding of the tragedies he endures. His initial motivation to join the Military Police is supplanted after he is inspired by Eren Yeager's passionate speeches, leading him to choose the dangerous path of the Survey Corps. His central driving force becomes a personal quest tied to the destruction of his hometown. After the Beast Titan appears, Conny returns to Ragako to find all its inhabitants missing, only to discover a feeble, immobile Titan lying on his house that speaks the words, "You... returned...". He later learns that this Titan is, in fact, his mother, transformed by Zeke Yeager's spinal fluid, a revelation that shatters his innocence and fuels his rage and sorrow for the remainder of the narrative.

Conny's role in the story is that of a steadfast, if occasionally struggling, member of the Survey Corps and later the new "Levi Squad." He participates in nearly every major operation, from the Battle of Trost District, where he helped lure the rogue Titan Eren, to the mission to retake Shiganshina District. He fights in the Raid on Liberio, using explosives to cut off enemy reinforcements. In the final arc, he joins the unlikely alliance formed to stop Eren's apocalyptic Rumbling, participating in the climactic Battle of Heaven and Earth. During the final battle, he is briefly transformed into a Pure Titan by the monster's gas but is later restored to human form following the death of Eren Yeager and the end of the Titan powers.

His key relationships are central to his character development. He shares a particularly close bond with Sasha Blouse; they are frequently depicted as an "idiot duo," providing comedic relief while also sharing a deep, familial loyalty. Her death at the hands of Gabi Braun is a devastating blow that pushes him toward a vengeful and morally complex path. He initially views Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover as older brother figures and trusted comrades, making their betrayal as the Armored and Colossal Titans a profound source of confusion and anger. His relationship with his transformed mother becomes a pivotal test of his morality. In a moment of desperation, he attempts to feed the young warrior candidate Falco Grice to his Titan mother in a misguided plan to restore her humanity, only to be stopped by Armin Arlert's self-sacrifice, which in turn restores Conny's own moral compass.

Conny undergoes significant development, transforming from a simple-minded and carefree boy into a battle-hardened soldier. Early on, he is characterized by his thoughtless bravado and susceptibility to panic. The trauma of finding his mother as a Titan marks a clear turning point, stripping away much of his humor and replacing it with a grim determination. His evolution is perhaps best illustrated by his near-descent into villainy when he attempts to sacrifice Falco, a dark moment that highlights how grief can corrupt even the most good-natured individuals. However, his ultimate choice to save Armin and reject that path demonstrates his core decency and growth into a man who chooses to honor his mother's memory by being a good soldier and protecting others.

Conny's notable abilities lie almost exclusively in his physical prowess. He possesses excellent balance and reflexes, making him highly proficient with Vertical Maneuvering Equipment. His small stature early on grants him an advantage in agility and quick turning, and his instructors praise his natural coordination and speed. In combat, his style is flexible and relies on his quick reactions rather than raw strength. He develops into a highly capable soldier, surviving numerous deadly engagements and earning his place among the elite surviving members of the Survey Corps. However, his abilities are consistently hampered by his weak strategic thinking and poor judgment, a flaw he never fully overcomes but learns to manage by relying on his more level-headed comrades. By the end of the story, he has grown physically taller and more formidable, having survived as an ordinary human amidst conflicts involving Titan shifters and Ackermans, a testament to his durability and combat sense. His mother is ultimately restored to human form after the power of the Titans vanishes, and Conny survives the final battle to live in a world free of walls.
