Description
C-17, also known as Artificial Human No. 17, is a character who originally debuted as an antagonist but later became a key hero. His original human name is Lapis, and he is the twin brother of Android 18. As teenagers, he and his sister were delinquents who were kidnapped and forcibly remodeled into cybernetic beings by the mad scientist Dr. Gero, who sought to create the perfect soldiers to defeat Son Goku.
As a creation of Dr. Gero, C-17 possesses several distinct abilities that set him apart from regular warriors. His most notable trait is his perpetual energy generator, which means he never tires in battle and can fight at full strength indefinitely. He also cannot be sensed by traditional energy detection methods because his ki is artificial and does not function like that of a living being. His combat repertoire includes incredible speed and strength, an energy shield or barrier that can block or contain powerful attacks, and standard ki blasts.
When C-17 is first introduced, his personality is that of a reckless anarchist and a rebel without a true cause. He views the world as a playground, finding amusement in destruction and mischief, such as stealing cars for fun rather than necessity. He is also extremely overconfident in his power, believing no one can match him. Despite his hatred for his creator, he initially follows his programming to locate and kill Goku. This version of C-17 meets his end when he is absorbed by the bio-android Cell, who uses his body to achieve his Perfect Form.
After being resurrected alongside Cell's other victims, C-17 disappears from the main story for a long period. During this time, he undergoes a profound transformation. He leaves his life of violence behind and becomes a park ranger, where he dedicates himself to protecting the wildlife on a remote island sanctuary. He develops a love for nature and a strong sense of justice, specifically targeting poachers who threaten the animals under his care. In this new peaceful life, he marries a zoologist and starts a family, having one biological child and adopting two more. His life as a ranger also serves as rigorous training, honing his already formidable combat skills to a level far surpassing his original power.
His role in the story becomes crucial again during the Tournament of Power. When Goku seeks him out as a potential team member for Universe 7, C-17 initially refuses. He is only convinced to participate after Goku helps him fend off a group of alien poachers, causing C-17 to feel indebted. His key motivation for fighting is a simple and humble one: he desires to win the tournament to wish for a luxury cruiser, which he plans to use to take his family on a vacation around the world.
During the Tournament of Power, C-17 proves to be one of Universe 7's most valuable and strategic fighters. He has shed his earlier arrogance, replacing it with a calm, tactical, and highly pragmatic approach to combat. He is not above interrupting an enemy's transformation sequence to gain the upper hand and consistently analyzes his opponents for weaknesses. He plays a critical role in eliminating several key fighters, including the entirety of Universe 4's tricky invisible warrior and Universe 3's powerful fusion, Aniraza. He also repeatedly saves his allies, including his sister Android 18 and even the villainous Frieza, from being eliminated. In a stunning turn of events, C-17 is the last warrior from Universe 7 left standing on the arena, officially becoming the winner of the Tournament of Power. When granted a wish from the Super Dragon Balls, he demonstrates the depth of his character development by using it not for personal gain, but to restore all the erased universes, saving countless lives and becoming a true hero of the multiverse.
His key relationships are central to his identity. He shares a close, protective bond with his twin sister, Android 18, who is married to the Z-Fighter Krillin, making Krillin his brother-in-law. During his time as a ranger, C-17 lives a quiet life with his wife and children, a far cry from his violent origins as a delinquent and engineered weapon.
