Description
Claire is a waitress aboard the dining car of the Galaxy Express 999, and she is distinguished by her body, which is composed entirely of clear crystal glass. Her appearance is that of a translucent, light blue figure, and she possesses the unique ability to produce a bright light by increasing the vibration of her internal eternal energy, a skill that proves useful when the train passes through dark areas like asteroid tunnels.
Unlike many other mechanized beings who voluntarily exchanged their human bodies for machine ones, Claire was forced into this state against her will by her vain mother. She deeply regrets the loss of her humanity and is driven by a singular, poignant motivation: to earn enough money from her job to buy back her original human body, which is being stored in cryogenic suspension on the planet Pluto. This desire for warmth and physical connection makes her a sympathetic figure, and she expresses a longing for the sensation of human touch, such as the feeling of warm blood flowing through veins.
In her role on the train, Claire exhibits a polite, calm, and collected demeanor, quickly befriending the young protagonist, Tetsuro Hoshino. Their friendship is central to her story. Her most significant act comes when the 999 passes through a dangerous asteroid belt, a region known for causing life-threatening hallucinations. When a demonic entity assumes the guise of Tetsuro's late mother and attempts to throw him from the train, Claire intervenes. She sacrifices herself to save the boy, using her ability to self-destruct or by shattering her glass body in a flash of light, destroying the demon in the process. Her body is shattered into countless pieces, all of which the Conductor subsequently disposes of into space, except for a single, tear-shaped shard that Tetsuro keeps as a memento.
Claire's fate is revisited in later storylines. In the subsequent manga series Galaxy Express 999: Eternal Fantasy and the Eternal arc, Claire is mysteriously restored to life and resumes her duties on the 999. Her personal journey continues, as she still lacks a human body; during a stop on the planet Helmazaria, a man offers to remodel her glass frame so she could live for a thousand more years, an offer she ultimately rejects. In these later adventures, Claire once again confronts the antagonist Promethium and makes a second sacrifice to protect Tetsuro, destroying herself and Promethium in a brilliant explosion, leaving behind only another glass tear for Tetsuro to carry with him.
