Description
Angira is a fictional character who appears exclusively in the 1991 film Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug. He serves as the strongest and most elite soldier in the army of the tyrant Lord Slug, a renegade Super Namekian. In terms of his visual design and demeanor, Angira bears a notable resemblance to Zarbon, one of the principal henchmen of the villain Frieza from the main Dragon Ball Z series.
Standing tall with a muscular and imposing physique, Angira has cyan-colored skin, pointed ears, small horns on his forehead, and long, shaggy blonde hair. His attire is modeled after Ancient Greek fashion, typically consisting of a light purple toga, a purple bandana, red earrings, blue bracers, a flowing purple cape, white pants, and dark orange-and-blue boots. Some early concept art and cover illustrations depict his clothing as red and his skin as a light green instead.
Angira possesses a personality marked by arrogance, vanity, and unwavering loyalty to his master, Lord Slug. He is a serious and disciplined soldier who follows orders without hesitation or question, often reprimanding other members of Lord Slug's clan for expressing doubt or complaining about their directives. Despite his professional demeanor as a warrior, he reveals a vain side, once complaining about getting his clothes dirty on what he considered his day off. He is utterly merciless in his duties, shown callously killing an innocent civilian in a small village simply to obtain a Dragon Ball. In battle, he is cocky and ruthless, taunting his opponents and showing no concern for fallen allies, dismissing one comrade as a fool after he is killed.
Angira's primary motivation is the successful completion of Lord Slug's plans for universal conquest. He fully supports his master's goal of taking over Earth, gathering the Dragon Balls to restore Lord Slug's youth, and transforming the planet into a giant spacecraft. As the commander of Lord Slug's ground forces, Angira leads the search for the Dragon Balls alongside his fellow elite soldiers, Wings and Medamatcha. He takes pride in his position and power, confidently asserting Lord Slug's dominion over the universe.
Within the story of the film, Angira is a major antagonist and the primary field commander for Lord Slug. He and his comrades successfully gather the seven Dragon Balls in under an hour, with Angira personally securing one by committing murder. When the heroes, Piccolo and a young Gohan, intervene, Angira engages them in combat. He works in tandem with Medamatcha, using coordinated energy attacks to overwhelm Piccolo. Later, after the arrival of Goku, Angira attempts to gain the upper hand by using his signature arm-extension technique to grab Goku from underground, calling for Medamatcha to attach parasitic creatures called Medas to him. However, this strategy fails. Enraged by the swift defeat of his partner, Angira charges at Goku and fires a powerful Mouth Energy Wave. In a decisive counter, Goku deflects the energy blast directly back at Angira, forcing it into his own mouth and causing his head to explode, killing him instantly.
Angira’s key relationships are defined by his role in Lord Slug’s chain of command. He is completely subservient and loyal to Lord Slug, acting as his right hand and enforcing his will without question. He views his fellow elite soldiers, Medamatcha and Wings, as comrades and tools for accomplishing their mission, showing irritation when they fail but working effectively alongside them in battle. He holds no loyalty to any other characters and treats civilians and enemies with utter contempt.
In terms of character development, Angira remains a static figure throughout the film. He is introduced as a powerful, arrogant, and loyal soldier and dies with those same traits. His primary function is to serve as a formidable obstacle for the heroes, demonstrating the strength of Lord Slug's army before the final confrontation with the main villain. He does not undergo any change in personality or allegiance.
Angira is distinguished by several notable abilities common among powerful warriors in the Dragon Ball universe, including flight and the manipulation of ki to fire energy blasts. He possesses a unique physical technique called Mystic Attack, which allows him to extend the length of his arms to extraordinary lengths, similar to the abilities of Piccolo and other Namekians, enabling him to grab opponents from a distance or from underground. His signature finishing move is the Mouth Energy Wave, a potent beam of ki fired from his mouth. He is also proficient in using the Full Power Energy Blast Volley, a rapid-fire barrage of ki bolts, which he uses in combination with Medamatcha to overwhelm his enemies.
