Description
Hizamaru is a personification of a tachi sword, known as a Touken Danshi, who serves as a prominent character in the anime Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. His name originates from a legendary cutting test where the blade sliced through the knees of a criminal in a single stroke. Historically, the sword had several other names, including Makuragami, Kumokirimaru, Hoemaru, and Usumidori, the latter being its official historical title from the Heian period. The sword is a treasure of the Minamoto clan. Physically, Hizamaru is depicted as a young man with distinctive green hair swept to one side and orange or yellow eyes, often shown with prominent fangs. He wears a dark military-style uniform with black gloves.

Hizamaru's personality is defined by a deep sense of duty, loyalty, and an intense admiration for his elder brother, Higekiri. He is generally more serious, stoic, and level-headed compared to his carefree and absent-minded brother. This dynamic often places Hizamaru in the role of the responsible minder, constantly worrying about Higekiri's behavior and whether he is causing trouble for others. A core and recurring trait is his preoccupation with being forgotten or neglected by his brother, particularly when Higekiri cannot remember his name. Despite showing frustration over this, his primary motivation is to gain Higekiri's approval and to never be separated from him again, a fear that stems from their historical past as separate blades. He is eager to prove his worth and ensure his brother's honor is never tarnished, showing a determined and sometimes intense side in battle.

In the story of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Hizamaru is introduced alongside his brother as new arrivals at the citadel. He is often paired with Higekiri in various missions and daily life scenarios, providing a contrast to his brother's whimsical nature. His role frequently involves anchoring the narrative with his more grounded perspective, questioning his brother's actions, and expressing exasperation at being overlooked. A key part of his journey involves participating in sorties and expeditions, where his combat skills are put to the test. His development revolves around his relationship with his brother, learning to navigate his anxieties while demonstrating that their bond is genuine, despite Higekiri's forgetfulness. He works to establish his own identity within the citadel while remaining a devoted younger brother.

The central relationship in Hizamaru's life is with Higekiri. This bond is the primary driver of his dialogue and actions, with most of his lines inquiring about his brother's whereabouts or reacting to his behavior. This dynamic, inspired by the historical respect Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Hizamaru's owner) held for his brother Yoritomo (Higekiri's owner), creates a classic comedy duo of boke (the silly one) and tsukkomi (the straight man). Beyond his brother, he interacts with other swords at the citadel, such as Kashuu Kiyomitsu who shows him around upon arrival, and often finds himself in the role of mediator or the only sane man in chaotic situations, particularly when teamed with more eccentric characters.

As a sword manifested as a warrior, Hizamaru possesses considerable combat abilities. He is classified as a tachi, a type of long sword known for its power and reach. Initially of medium rarity, he can increase his power through a process called Toku, achieving higher rarity forms such as Toku Ni, and ultimately the highest form called Kiwame. In battle, he is capable of powerful single strikes and can be a determined and effective fighter. His determination is such that he cannot afford to let personal losses affect his brother's honor, showing his resilience. He is also perceptive in a tactical sense, capable of tracking enemy traces and formulating ambushes.
