Description
AnchoR is a central character in the anime Clockwork Planet, a mechanical automaton created over a thousand years prior to the story's events. She is formally designated as the fourth unit of the Initial Y-Series, making her a direct sibling unit to the primary automaton, RyuZU. Her physical form is that of a young girl, standing under 140 centimeters tall, with a delicate build that is notably smaller than even the petite human character Marie Bell Breguet. She possesses striking red hair and matching red eyes, and her default attire is a gothic-style dress.
Unlike other automata of her series, AnchoR was constructed with a singular and devastating purpose: to be the ultimate weapon. Her creator, the enigmatic genius known as Y, granted her the core command of Destroyer, and she is equipped with combat capabilities that far surpass any other automaton in existence. To facilitate this, she is powered by a unique and powerful core function known as the Perpetual Gear, a perpetual motion engine that allows her to operate indefinitely. This engine converts all energy from its automatic winding mechanism into heat, which is then stored within a cube on her chest. She can weaponize this stored thermal energy to perform extraordinary feats, including dimensional manipulation that allows her to tear through spacetime for offensive attacks.
Her personality is defined by a profound contradiction arising from her nature as a weapon. After being repaired and freed from external control, she develops a childlike and affectionate demeanor towards those who saved her, most notably referring to the young mechanical genius Naoto Miura as father and the noblewoman Marie as mother. This behavior stands in stark contrast to her intended purpose, as she is the sole Y-Series unit designed to have her free will frozen upon finding a master, turning her into a pure tool of destruction. However, Naoto rejects this design and orders her to unlock her free will, allowing her to retain her emerging personality while still being bound to him as her master.
Within the story, AnchoR is first discovered as a dormant weapon in the ruins of Kyoto. She is subsequently captured and weaponized by antagonists who use a mask to control her, forcing her to attack the main characters. After being defeated by Naoto and RyuZU, she is repaired and joins their group. Her role becomes that of the party's primary source of overwhelming force, serving as a living trump card in combat situations. Her primary motivation is to serve her new family, especially Naoto, whom she is inseparable from due to a limitation that prevents her from moving too far away from her master.
Her key relationships define her arc. Her bond with Naoto is one of devotion and childlike affection, as he is the one who correctly answered her master authentication question, What am I?, with the answer a girl, proving he would not simply wield her as a mindless weapon. Her relationship with her older sister, RyuZU, is complex, shifting from a rival to a close familial bond where RyuZU acts as a protective elder sister. Her dynamic with Marie is initially strained, as Marie views her as a dangerous tool, but evolves into a genuine mother-daughter relationship as the story progresses.
AnchoR undergoes significant development as she reconciles her identity as the Destroyer. Initially, she suffers from a form of self-loathing due to her designated purpose of breaking and destroying. Through her interactions with Naoto and her family, she learns a new perspective: that breaking things is not inherently evil if it allows for the broken pieces to be reassembled into something useful. This philosophical shift grants her confidence and helps her accept her own nature. In a climactic battle against a massive electromagnetic weapon, she unleashes her ultimate and forbidden ability, the Steel Weight or Final Maneuver, a second terminal command that releases all her stored power for a single, devastating attack at the cost of destroying her own body. This act of self-sacrifice to protect her family solidifies her growth from a mere weapon into a person capable of love and heroism.
