Description
Mako Akagi is a second-year middle school student and an amateur dancer in the world of competitive ballroom dancing. She is the younger sister and longtime dance partner of Gaju Akagi. Mako first began dancing when she was four years old, and it was her own initiative that led the pair into the dance world. Despite this early start, she is initially characterized by a shy and reserved personality, often concerned about those around her. She struggles with self-doubt and timidity, feeling overshadowed by her brother's dominant presence and believing herself to be unworthy of his partnership. This inner conflict is a central part of her early character. Her motivation is rooted in a genuine love for dance and a desire to improve, though her lack of confidence holds her back. In the story, Mako plays a supporting role, particularly in relation to the protagonist Tatara Fujita. When circumstances force a temporary change in partnerships, Mako pairs with Tatara for the Tenpei Cup competition. Through this experience, she begins to gain confidence and becomes more comfortable with herself. Despite the pair placing seventh, Mako achieves a significant personal victory by winning the Queen of the Ballroom trophy, beating the highly skilled Shizuku Hanaoka. This competition also serves as a turning point in her relationship with her brother, which improves considerably afterward. Mako is also shown to be protective; when her brother aggressively pursues Shizuku as a partner following an injury to another dancer, Mako attempts to shield Shizuku from Gaju. Her dedication to dance is evident in her diligent practice and commitment to improving her technique, though she initially prefers to stick with what she knows rather than seek a new partner. There are hints that she may have developed a crush on Tatara after their dance together at the Tenpei Cup, though this is not explicitly confirmed. Overall, Mako's development is defined by her journey from a timid, self-doubting dancer to a more confident and self-assured competitor, while her talents as a skilled and graceful dancer remain a constant through her growth.
