Description
Ivan Karelin, known by his hero alias Origami Cyclone, is a character who embodies the struggle between self-doubt and the desire to do good. A hero employed by Helperidese Finance, his outward persona as a flamboyant, kabuki-themed ninja stands in stark contrast to his true, reserved nature. At a young age, Ivan is already a veteran in the sense of being a graduate of the Hero Academy, yet he constantly battles a deep-seated lack of confidence.

Standing at 170 centimeters tall, Ivan possesses a youthful appearance that belies his status as an upperclassman to some of his peers. His entire identity is heavily influenced by a profound fascination with Japanese culture, specifically the imagery and perceived honor of ninjas and samurai, which is reflected in his weaponry and his hero costume. However, his enthusiasm for this aesthetic does little to mask his core personality; outside of the spotlight, Ivan is shy, insecure, and carries a significant emotional burden.

The root of Ivan's insecurity lies in his NEXT ability, known as Shapeshifting or Mimicry. This power allows him to perfectly copy the appearance and voice of any person or object he touches, but it does not grant him the abilities of those he mimics. He considers this power ill-suited for direct combat, which is the primary focus of the hero ranking system. Consequently, he begins his career relegated to a non-combative role, mostly appearing in the background of televised fights to ensure his sponsors' logos are visible—a task he performs with a mix of showmanship for the camera and quiet humiliation in private. His rank is consistently the lowest among the heroes, a fact that reinforces his belief that he is not a true hero.

This lack of confidence is rooted in a traumatic event from his past at the Hero Academy. His best friend, Edward Keddy, tried to stop a hostage situation. Overcome by fear and self-doubt, Ivan refused to help. The situation went wrong, resulting in a death and Edward being sent to prison, while Ivan could only watch. The overwhelming guilt of this failure defines his initial motivation: he feels he does not deserve to be a hero and that Edward, whose power was more combat-oriented, would have been worthier of the title.

His role within the story is initially that of a passive observer, but a key relationship with veteran hero Kotetsu Kaburagi, known as Wild Tiger, becomes the catalyst for his development. Kotetsu encourages Ivan to see the value in his unique power, pushing him to find creative applications for it rather than lamenting its limitations. This mentorship, alongside a confrontation with the escaped Edward, forces Ivan to confront his guilt. By risking his own life to save Edward from the vigilante Lunatic, Ivan begins to forgive himself and redefines his purpose as a hero.

From this point, Ivan's motivations shift from surviving as a promotional tool to actively contributing to missions. He evolves by using his shapeshifting not as a weapon, but as a tool for infiltration and rescue. He volunteers for dangerous undercover work, such as disguising himself as a criminal to infiltrate a hideout, and uses his power to impersonate hostages to surprise captors. His relationship with his peers, particularly his partner Rock Bison, Antonio Lopez, also develops as he proves his tactical value in the field, learning to work within a team dynamic despite his lingering self-consciousness.

Despite his growth, Ivan remains plagued by a quiet ethical ambiguity. He continues to believe that his methods—which rely on stealth, deception, and surprise—are somehow less noble than the straightforward, honorable combat he idealizes. Even as he becomes more courageous and selfless, this melancholy and thoughtful nature persists.

To compensate for his non-offensive power, Ivan has trained extensively in martial arts and the use of traditional weaponry. In his hero suit, he wields a pair of swords and is highly skilled in the use of shuriken, from small throwing stars to a large fuuma shuriken that he can use as both a cutting weapon and a vehicle to ride on for aerial mobility. He is physically fast and agile, which aids his hit-and-run tactics, and his training at the academy has provided him with a broad skill set beyond fighting, including piloting and diplomacy. Ultimately, Origami Cyclone is a story of incremental progress, a hero who proves that courage can be found in the quietest of people, even if the self-doubt never fully fades away.
