Description
Jolly is a central supporting character in La storia della Arcana Famiglia, serving as the right-hand man to the family’s leader, Mondo, and holding the position of Family Advisor, which makes him the second-highest ranking member of the organization.

His background is marked by a grim and isolated childhood. As a small child, he and his grandfather worked as gravekeepers in a desolate land filled with corpses. His grandfather would sometimes play the cello at funerals, a memory that left a strong impression on the young Jolly. After his grandfather died, Jolly continued the work alone, living among the dead. His life changed when a starving and exhausted traveler named Mondo collapsed near his shack. Instead of being repulsed, Mondo was horrified to find a child living in such conditions. He gave Jolly’s grandfather a proper burial and took the boy with him to raise alongside his own son, Joshua. Once on Regalo Island, Mondo taught Jolly how to read, but Jolly’s ambition drove him to study alchemy to gain other useful skills. He once attempted to create an immortality potion, but the experiment only succeeded in stopping his aging process, granting him a form of eternal youth. Jolly was also married at one point, and his wife gave birth to a son, Luca.

Jolly’s personality is cold, calculating, and enigmatic. He speaks in a slow, relaxed voice and is rarely seen outside his laboratory during the day. Due to his ruthless and emotionless actions, most people on the island fear him and view him as the very incarnation of terror. He is known for his condescending demeanor and looks down on others, which contributes to his general unpopularity despite the respect everyone holds for his unparalleled skills. As the Family Advisor, his decisions and sanctions are merciless, and he is widely considered a dangerous individual.

Jolly’s primary motivation is his absolute and unwavering loyalty to Mondo, the man who saved him from his desolate childhood. For Jolly, Mondo is his entire world, and he is willing to do anything to protect and prolong Mondo’s life. This devotion drives many of his most extreme actions, including the creation of a homunculus and conducting dangerous experiments on humans. He has used his alchemical knowledge to forcibly forge Arcana contracts with individuals, viewing them as tools to lighten Mondo’s burden as the bearer of the World Arcana, which is slowly draining his life force.

In the story, Jolly acts as a shadowy strategist and a catalyst for conflict. His past actions, particularly his experiments on the younger members of the family, are a source of significant tension. He is the one who gave Luca, Pace, and Debito their stigmata, an act that involved great suffering and is the root of their deep-seated hatred for him. His role often involves pushing others to their limits for the sake of his greater goal: saving Mondo. He uses his alchemy to create Elmo, an artificial human, for whom he displays an unusual and uncharacteristic gentleness. Later in the story, he leverages the protagonist Felicita’s Arcana, the Wheel of Fortune, to save Mondo. When this results in her losing all her memories, it is Jolly who uses his own abilities to enter her mind and retrieve them, an act that reveals a subtle shift in his priorities.

Jolly’s key relationships are defined by a stark contrast between absolute devotion and cold utility. His relationship with Mondo is the most important in his life, characterized by fierce loyalty and a son-like reverence. In contrast, his relationship with his biological son, Luca, is deeply damaged; Jolly was an emotionally distant father who saw him and his friends as little more than subjects for his experiments, leading Luca to despise and mistrust him. He is the creator and mentor of the homunculus Elmo, treating the artificial lifeform with a kindness he never showed his own son. His interest in Felicita initially focuses solely on her power as a tool to save Mondo, but as the story progresses, particularly after he witnesses her memories and helps recover her lost ones, a more genuine bond begins to form between them.

Jolly undergoes subtle but significant development. He begins as a seemingly emotionless man who views all others as expendable assets in his mission to save Mondo. However, his interactions with Felicita and his creation Elmo chip away at this cold exterior. He experiences a sense of regret and loss when Felicita loses her memories, and he is inspired by Elmo’s simple determination to help her, which prompts him to find a way to restore what was lost. By the end of the Arcana Duello, he seeks to overcome Mondo not out of malice but to step out of his shadow, having found a new world to protect beyond the single man who saved him.

Jolly possesses formidable abilities that make him one of the most powerful members of the family. He is recognized as the best alchemist on Regalo Island, using his extensive knowledge to create artificial life, such as the homunculus Elmo, and to conduct various experiments. He holds the contract for the Moon Arcana, with his stigmata located in his right eye. This power centers on the manipulation of the mind and memories. His specific technique, La Luna Sonno (The Sleeping Moon), allows him to hypnotize a target to enter their mind and explore their memories, as well as forcibly bring hidden or forgotten memories to the surface. He can also use this ability to implant powerful illusions, such as making a person who looks directly into his eye experience painful nightmares drawn from their own past. His primary weapon is alchemy itself, and his signature look includes a blue suit, loose tie, and sunglasses that hide his stigmata-marked eye.
