Description
Akari Sakishima is a central character from the anime A Lull in the Sea. She is the older sister of Hikari Sakishima and the daughter of Tomoru and Hokage Sakishima. Originally a resident of the undersea village Shioshishio, Akari is a young woman with a warm and compassionate nature. She has chin-length dark brown hair with small curls framing her face and square-cut bangs, as well as ocean-blue eyes, a trait common among sea dwellers, and a small beauty mark under her right eye. Her early attire consists of a light pink top with light blue jeans, reflecting her cheerful and casual style. Following a significant time skip in the series, her hair has grown longer and is often tied back in a small ponytail, and her clothing matures to items like a dark pink sweater and long dark blue jeans, often accessorized with a seashell necklace given to her by her stepdaughter, Miuna.

Personality-wise, Akari is portrayed as exceptionally kind-hearted, cheerful, and nurturing. She acts as a pillar of emotional support for her family and friends. Following the death of her mother, she took on a mature and responsible role within her family, suppressing her own grief to support her younger brother, Hikari. As an older sister, she is encouraging and supportive of Hikari, often gently teasing him about his feelings for his friend, Manaka Mukaido. She displays a strong sense of independence and compassion, standing by her beliefs even when faced with significant societal opposition.

Akari's background is marked by sacrifice and unfulfilled dreams. As a child, she aspired to become a manga artist and dreamed of attending school on the surface to pursue that goal. However, after her mother passed away, she began working at Saya Mart, a convenience store on the surface, to help provide for her family and ensure that Hikari could have the opportunity to attend college. Her role in the story is primarily driven by her romantic relationship with Itaru Shiodome, a man from the surface who was the widower of her close friend, Miori Shiodome. Their relationship is a major source of conflict, as it defies the old customs of her undersea village and sparks tension between the sea and surface communities, leading to her temporary banishment. Her decision to relocate to the surface to be with Itaru is a pivotal moment that explores themes of love, family, and societal acceptance.

Key relationships define much of Akari's journey. Her relationship with Itaru Shiodome evolves from providing support to a grieving family into a deep romantic love, culminating in marriage and the birth of their son, Akira Shiodome, after which she takes the name Akari Shiodome. A particularly nuanced relationship is with her stepdaughter, Miuna Shiodome. Miuna is the daughter of Itaru and his late first wife, Miori, who was Akari's close friend. While initially there is tension and Miuna feels conflicted about Akari marrying her father, their bond deepens over time, symbolized by the treasured seashell necklace Miuna gives her. Akari is also a devoted older sister to Hikari, whom she supports unconditionally, and she maintains friendships with other young sea dwellers like Manaka Mukaido and Chisaki Hiradaira.

Akari undergoes significant development throughout the series. Her personal journey is one of sacrifice, resilience, and building a new life. She is one of the first adult characters to defy the strict traditions of Shioshishio for the sake of love. Her courage is further tested when she serves as a sacrifice during the Ofunehiki ritual, a ceremony meant to appease the Sea God, during which she nearly loses her life before being saved. After this traumatic event, during which her brother goes missing, she discovers she is pregnant. Initially hesitant due to the guilt and turmoil of the circumstances, she is encouraged by Miuna to have the child, showcasing her emotional vulnerability and strength. By the end of the story, she is fully committed to her new life on the surface, happily married and raising her family, and she becomes a symbol of bridging the gap between the sea and the land. A notable ability, or rather a significant aspect of her character, is her personal transition; she is one of the few sea dwellers who permanently relocates to the surface, choosing to give birth there and cementing her new family and identity.
