Description
Leonardo Bistario Harwey is the heir to the Harwey family, which controls approximately sixty percent of the real world's wealth. He was born into a lineage that grooms its successors for absolute rule, and from the age of three, he underwent extreme conditioning: repeated surgeries and a sound thaumaturgical process that burned knowledge directly into his brain. This upbringing, combined with his natural talent and a severe, thorough education, shaped him into a being designed to be the perfect ruler. Despite his immense power and privilege, he lacks normal human emotions, having discarded them in order to realize an ideal managed society where people of differing abilities can live in equality. He is polite, mild-mannered, and calm, but his perspective is fundamentally detached from the struggles of ordinary people.
Leonardo participates in the Holy Grail War not for personal ambition but because he believes the Grail is a potentially dangerous force. He fears that if it falls into the wrong hands, it will cause conflict and accelerate humanity's ruin. His goal is to secure the Grail to guarantee a stable, peaceful existence for mankind for the next millennium, even if that means prioritizing survival over the continued rule of his own family. He sees the path humanity is on as leading to stagnation and exhaustion, and he considers it his duty to search out a new direction. This makes him a force of stagnation and defense, in contrast to protagonists who represent change and offense.
Within the story of Fate/Extra Last Encore, Leonardo serves as the Floor Master of the Seventh Heaven, the highest stratum of the Moon Cell. He won the Holy Grail War one thousand years prior, but his victory resulted in the stagnation of the digital world because he lacked any desire for change or evolution. He remains at the top of the tower, maintaining a perfect but lifeless domain where no further growth occurs. He is the Master of Gawain, one of the Knights of the Round Table, whom he treats with mutual respect and absolute authority. Gawain sees Leonardo as the ideal sovereign, a ruler worthy of his loyalty. Leonardo also has a younger half-brother, Julius B. Harwey, who serves as a floor master in earlier strata, though the two are not close.
The protagonist, Hakuno Kishinami, and his Servant Nero Claudius ascend through the floors to confront Leonardo. Initially, Leonardo views Hakuno as an anomaly, a defective existence that threatens the stability of his reign. Their confrontation becomes the final martial obstacle, with Gawain serving as the ultimate guardian. During the battle, Leonardo begins to experience something he has never known: the possibility of loss and the value of imperfection. Through his defeat, he comes to understand the necessity of struggle and the beauty of human frailty, finally grasping what he lacked as a ruler. This realization allows him to become a true king in the moment of his death, but he is fated to perish.
As a Master, Leonardo is the strongest participant in the Holy Grail War. His parameters are all maxed out, and his innate talent—including high-quality magic circuits—was refined further by his upbringing. He is an exceptional strategist and possesses overwhelming computational power, though Rin Tohsaka surpasses him in offensive codecasts and Rani VIII in raw computational ability. Even so, he would likely defeat both if they challenged him together. He is described as the eternally victorious King, never having faced a genuine threat until Hakuno. His Servant Gawain is a Saber-class knight whose power triples under sunlight thanks to the Numeral of the Saint, making him a nearly unbeatable guardian. Leonardo himself does not engage in direct combat; his strength lies in his role as a Master and his unshakable composure. He accepts everything as it comes, never reacting with fear or desperation, a trait that both defines his strength and reveals his fundamental lack of human desire.
