Description
Neri is a character from the anime Children of the Whales. She is initially introduced as an Unmarked child who serves the Committee of Elders on the Mud Whale. It is later revealed that she has a special connection to the Nous, the mysterious entity that resides within the Mud Whale and influences its movements and abilities. Neri has a twin sister named Aima, who is said to be her opposite in personality and more willing to reveal the secrets of the Mud Whale.

In terms of personality, Neri is generally kind and soft-spoken. She appears gentle and reserved, often speaking in a calm manner. At times, however, her demeanor shifts, and she becomes more assertive and knowledgeable about the Mud Whale, resembling her sister Aima. This dual aspect of her personality hints at a deeper link to the Nous and the ancient powers tied to the vessel.

Neri’s role in the story is primarily that of a supporting character who provides crucial insight into the nature of the Mud Whale and the Nous. She is present when Lykos, a girl from outside, reveals an imminent attack on the Mud Whale to Suou, one of the main characters. Her actions become pivotal during an attack by enemy soldiers: she shields Chakuro, the protagonist, from gunfire and is mortally wounded. After her death, she briefly returns as a spirit, confesses her feelings to Chakuro, and kisses him before disappearing. This moment significantly impacts Chakuro and drives his emotional development.

Neri does not possess thymia, the psychic ability that Marked individuals have. Instead, her notable ability is her unique bond with the Nous, which allows her to perceive and communicate with it in ways others cannot. This connection makes her a key figure in understanding the Mud Whale’s true nature and history.

Her key relationships include her twin sister Aima, who represents the more chaotic and forward side of the same connection to the Nous, and Chakuro, for whom she develops deep feelings and ultimately sacrifices herself. She also interacts with Lykos and Suou in scenes that advance the plot. Throughout the series, Neri’s development moves from a quiet servant of the elders to a reveal of her hidden significance, culminating in her selfless act and the emotional closure of her spirit’s farewell.
