TV-Series
Description
Jinbei Shishido is an ancient and powerfully built immortal who holds the number two position within the secret organization UQ Holder, often humorously referring to himself as its leader. His physical appearance is that of a young man with red hair typically tied in a long ponytail and an average but muscular build, though his true age is well over fourteen hundred years. He often wears a carefree, easygoing smile, but his body is covered in numerous scars, a permanent reminder of his specific and limited form of immortality.
Jinbei's personality is defined by a laid-back, almost lazy demeanor. He has a very relaxed perception of time, thinking nothing of sitting in one place for a year or being trapped in an underground labyrinth for two years after being thrown there as a joke. This easygoing attitude often masks his incredible experience and power. Despite his self-proclaimed leadership, he tends to avoid responsibility and hard work, preferring to take things slowly. He has a mischievous side, frequently using his unique abilities to play pranks on younger members, such as stealing their belongings or swapping their possessions for his own amusement.
His core motivation stems from sheer survival. Approximately 1,400 years ago, he achieved immortality by consuming the flesh of a merperson. This event set him on a path of outlasting all of his original comrades, forcing him to adapt and grow stronger across the centuries to protect his own existence. He has fought in numerous historical conflicts, from feudal Japan to the battlefields of World War II and beyond. This long life has given him a stoic, pragmatic outlook on death, accepting fatal outcomes when a battle becomes unwinnable, a perspective unique to someone who has witnessed countless eras pass.
Within the story of UQ Holder, Jinbei serves as a mentor and a powerful asset for the younger members. He first appears to guide protagonists Touta Konoe and Kuroumaru Tokisaka when they become lost in the organization's underground maze. He assists in their early training and recommends powerful weapons for them to use. In critical battles, he acts as a secret weapon, using his immense strength and spatial abilities to save his comrades from deadly threats, such as when he intercepted an attack from the immortal hunter Shion Nagumo. His strategic intellect and combat prowess are instrumental in major conflicts against powerful enemies like the cyborg Cutlass and the deity Ialda.
Key relationships define his long history. He shares a deep bond with Evangeline A.K. McDowell, having helped her establish UQ Holder, though their camaraderie is punctuated by incidents like him being thrown into a dungeon for stealing her food. He once served as a teacher to the far more dangerous immortal Juuzou Shishimi, a student who eventually surpassed the master. He also formed a sworn brotherhood with Gengorou Makabe after defeating him in combat. These relationships, spanning centuries, are marked by a mix of deep loyalty and an emotional distance born from his ancient perspective.
His development as a character is shown through the acquisition of new powers in response to world-altering events. For most of his life, he relied on his raw physical strength and hand-to-hand combat expertise, honed over fourteen hundred years of training, to fight. This strength is monstrous, allowing him to wield a gravity sword at 500,000 times its normal weight and throw it through a building. However, it was the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 that awakened his signature ability. Facing this unprecedented existential crisis, he unlocked a power he calls Reversal or Switcheroo, officially named the Mugeuk Taegeukban. This ability allows him to swap the positions of any two objects or people within a range of about 100 meters. At its highest level, it allows him to perceive reality as a four-dimensional chessboard, effectively slowing time to a crawl and allowing him to manipulate space itself, teleporting allies, dodging nearly any attack by swapping himself with something else, or even teleporting away parts of an enemy's body.
Notable abilities include his immortality, which is classified as a weak form. He does not age, but his regeneration is slow and inefficient; mortal wounds will eventually heal but always leave scars. He could potentially be killed by complete decapitation or powerful poisons. This weakness, however, is more than compensated for by his immense physical strength, durability to withstand powerful blows, and his reality-altering spatial manipulation power. He has also proven to be a highly skilled thief, capable of taking items from people without them noticing any movement. His long life as a soldier has made him an expert in multiple forms of martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, allowing him to easily hold his own against younger, less experienced immortals.
