Description
Nakuru Akizuki, whose true form is Ruby Moon, is one of two magical guardians created by Eriol Hiiragizawa. She is designed as the counterpart to Yue, the other guardian, and possesses magical abilities tied to the moon. Ruby Moon is genderless but prefers to present herself as female. When Eriol transfers to Tomoeda Elementary School, Ruby Moon adopts the false identity of Nakuru Akizuki and enrolls at Seijou High School, enrolling in the same class as Touya Kinomoto and Yukito Tsukishiro.
In her Nakuru form, she is bright, mischievous, and highly energetic, often clinging to Touya and deliberately interrupting his conversations with Yukito. She claims that she wants to consume Touya's magical energy for herself, though it is never clearly established that she truly needs it. She is athletic, enjoys acting cute, and excels at mathematics. Despite her playful and sometimes annoying behavior, she is also intelligent and calculating, particularly in combat and when assessing the situation between Touya and Yukito. Her personality in her Nakuru form is the same as in her true form; unlike Yue, she does not have a separate persona.
Ruby Moon's role in the story is to serve her master Eriol's plans, which ultimately involve testing and helping Sakura Kinomoto grow as a magician. She battles Yue in the final confrontation when Sakura needs to transform the Light and Dark Cards. Though she initially appears to be winning, she is overcome by Yue's greater determination and desire to protect Sakura. Despite acting as an obstacle, she means no real harm and is ultimately helping Sakura develop her powers. In the Clear Card Prologue and the subsequent Clear Card arc, she continues to appear, expressing continued interest in the main characters.
Her key relationships include Eriol, her creator and master; Spinel Sun, Eriol's other guardian, whom she teases constantly; Touya Kinomoto, whose magical energy she pursues; and Yukito Tsukishiro, the false form of Yue, whose energy depletion she monitors.
Developmentally, her initial pursuit of Touya's power ends when Touya voluntarily gives his magic to sustain Yue. After that, she ceases her interference and accepts the outcome. She retains a lively and mischievous demeanor throughout the series with no major personality shift.
