Description
Chizuru Yukimura is a young woman from Edo who travels alone to Kyoto disguised as a boy for safety, searching for her missing father, Koudou Yukimura, a doctor specializing in Western medicine. Upon arrival, she observes a confrontation between rogue samurai and supernatural beings, leading to her rescue by the Shinsengumi police force. The Shinsengumi reveal they are also searching for Koudou, whose clinic burned down under mysterious circumstances, and offer her protection in exchange for her help locating him. She stays at their headquarters, maintaining her male disguise to avoid disruption, though her gender is often recognized.

She has dark-brown hair typically in a ponytail with a white ribbon, brown eyes, and a petite stature. While disguised, she wears a peach-pink top and gray pants, distinct from the Shinsengumi's blue haori. She carries a kodachi, a family heirloom, though trained only in basic self-defense. Later, she adopts Western-style clothing in red, white, and black during the group's military modernization.

Chizuru displays a gentle-hearted, compassionate, and self-effacing personality, often prioritizing others' needs. She assists the Shinsengumi with domestic chores, medical care, and emotional support, forming deep bonds with members like Hijikata Toshizou and Okita Souji. Her loyalty remains unwavering; she refuses to abandon the Shinsengumi despite repeated kidnap attempts by factions targeting her heritage. Though initially fearful of violence, she demonstrates courage during crises, such as delivering critical messages during the Ikedaya Incident or shielding allies in battle. Her compassion extends to grieving fallen comrades, reflecting her role as the group's emotional anchor.

Initially unaware, Chizuru is a pureblood demon (oni) from the annihilated Yukimura clan. This heritage grants accelerated healing and makes her a target for factions seeking to preserve demon bloodlines, particularly Chikage Kazama, who intends to force her into marriage. She discovers she has a twin brother, Kaoru Nagumo, who initially opposes her for siding with humans. Her father, Koudou, experimented with the "Water of Life" (Ochimizu), an elixir transforming humans into enhanced but bloodthirsty Furies (Rasetsu). Koudou aimed to create a Fury army for human subjugation, positioning Chizuru as a target for his schemes or demon clans.

Her character evolves significantly. Early on, she is naive and dependent, but exposure to the Shinsengumi's ideals and hardships fosters resilience. She confronts her demon identity, eventually accepting it while rejecting its violent applications, fighting Kaoru to protect humans. She witnesses the Shinsengumi's decline, including allies like Sannan Keisuke and Hijikata becoming Rasetsu. After Kondou Isami's capture and execution, she remains with Hijikata, vowing mutual protection. In later arcs, she actively participates in strategic discussions and battlefield actions, notably during the defense of Kōfu Castle. Her journey culminates in a commitment to preserve the Shinsengumi's legacy and aid survivors, with some endings implying she pursues medicine or rebuilds her family clinic.
