TV-Series
Description
Dr. Franxx, whose real name is Werner Frank, is the elderly, partially mechanized scientist responsible for creating the FRANXX mecha and a central figure in the events surrounding the series. His physical appearance reflects his philosophy, with much of his head and his right hand replaced by mechanical components, marking him as a man who has willingly abandoned his human form in pursuit of his goals.
Originally a researcher specializing in cloning and other controversial fields, Dr. Franxx was recruited by the mysterious organization APE due to his exceptional scientific talents. He was instrumental in developing the technology for immortality, though he personally chose not to undergo the treatment, viewing it as unappealing and preferring cybernetic enhancement. His personality is a complex blend of cynical humor, scientific obsession, and a hidden sense of humanity. He often displays a lecherous and irreverent attitude, showing little respect for APE’s rigid authority or social norms. Underneath this facade lies a man driven by a deep, almost aesthetic, fascination with the Klaxosaur species.
Dr. Franxx's primary motivation is not a desire for power or eternal life, but a pursuit of what he considers beautiful and the advancement of knowledge, regardless of ethical boundaries. This becomes most apparent after he encounters the Klaxosaur Princess (Code:001), whom he instantly regards as the most beautiful being in existence. It was this obsession that led to the creation of Zero Two, whom he engineered using cells taken from the Princess after the Princess bit off his left arm.
His role in the story is that of an amoral creator and a hidden wild card. While officially serving the APE council, he pursues his own experiments, often undermining their plans. He is the primary caretaker and researcher of the young Zero Two, subjecting her to brutal experiments to test her regenerative abilities while also providing her with a children's picture book and, in his own way, protecting her. He takes a special interest in the partnership between Zero Two and the Parasite Hiro, hoping it will unlock Zero Two's potential and reveal a path forward for humanity. He secretly conducts experiments on the children of Plantation 13, isolating them to observe their development outside of APE's direct control.
Key relationships define his character arc. His relationship with Zero Two is the most significant, moving from that of a cold, torturous researcher to a guilt-ridden father figure seeking atonement. He eventually confesses his sins to her, hoping she can find happiness with her "Darling," Hiro. His relationship with the Klaxosaur Princess is one of pure, obsessive admiration that alters the course of his life and research. He also shares a history with his late wife, Karina Milsa, whose death during a FRANXX test filled him with a sense of loss and guilt that contributed to his emotional detachment.
Dr. Franxx undergoes significant development from a seemingly unfeeling scientist to a more remorseful figure. Initially, he is portrayed as a man who pursues his experiments without concern for the suffering of his subjects, such as the young Zero Two. Over time, he begins to regret his actions, covertly working against APE to give the children a chance at a normal life. He secretly preserved failed experiments in cryo-stasis, hoping they could one day be revived. In his final moments, he sacrifices his modified left arm to activate a key mechanism, ultimately helping the protagonists in their final battle and dying content after witnessing the culmination of his life’s work: the transformation of Strelizia.
His notable abilities lie not in combat, but in his unparalleled genius as a biologist and engineer. He created the FRANXX piloting system, which requires a male-female pair to operate, a concept inspired by the biology of the Klaxosaurs themselves. He also pioneered the immortality technology used by the adult society, and he possesses a deep, encyclopedic knowledge of the Klaxosaurs, their history, and their true nature as the remnants of an ancient civilization known as the Klaxo Sapiens. His mechanical body and the klaxosaur cells within his artificial arm serve as a testament to his willingness to transcend human limits for the sake of his research.
