Description
Fraudrin is a character from the manga and anime series The Seven Deadly Sins, specifically appearing as a primary antagonist in the Revival of The Commandments storyline. He is a member of the Demon King's elite warrior group known as the Ten Commandments, though he holds a unique position within it. Unlike his comrades, Fraudrin is a substitute member who took the seat of the original Gowther, the commandment of Selflessness, after Gowther left the group over three thousand years ago. As a result of being a stand-in, Fraudrin does not possess a true戒律 or commandment, meaning he cannot impose a cursed rule on opponents who act with selfishness. His power level is rated at 31,000, split between 13,000 in magic, 15,000 in strength, and 3,000 in spirit, which is considered the lowest among the Ten Commandments.
In terms of background, Fraudrin originated as a high-ranking demon general serving directly under the original Gowther during the ancient Holy War against the Goddess Clan. When the Ten Commandments were sealed away by the goddesses three thousand years ago, Fraudrin was the sole member to escape this fate. He remained dormant for centuries before awakening sixteen years prior to the main events. During this time, he caused the destruction of the city of Danafor and killed Liz, the beloved of Meliodas, the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins, which triggered a catastrophic rampage from Meliodas. Defeated but not destroyed, Fraudrin went into hiding. Ten years before the story begins, he encountered two Holy Knights, Dreyfus and Hendrickson, who were investigating the ruins of Danafor. He attempted to possess Dreyfus but failed due to Dreyfus's strong will. When he tried to take over Hendrickson instead, Dreyfus voluntarily surrendered his body to Fraudrin to save his friend. This marked the beginning of a decade-long possession during which Fraudrin, wearing Dreyfus's form, rose to the rank of Great Holy Knight and manipulated the kingdom of Liones from within.
Physically, Fraudrin's true form is a massive, purple-skinned demon with a grotesque appearance. His mouth is located on his chest rather than his face, and his body is covered with bumpy, spike-like protrusions on his back and arms. He stands 419 centimeters tall and weighs 690 kilograms in his base form. When not in his natural state, he resides within the body of Dreyfus, controlling the holy knight's actions while maintaining the appearance of a human.
The character's personality is defined by a mixture of cunning cruelty and a gradual, unintended development of human emotions. Initially, Fraudrin is portrayed as cold, calculating, and manipulative, viewing humans as simple pawns to be used for the revival of the demon clan. He delights in controlling others and orchestrating events from the shadows, having arranged the murder of the previous Great Holy Knight, Zaratras, and framing the Seven Deadly Sins for the crime. However, his long decade of living within Dreyfus and interacting with the knight's son, Griamore, has an unforeseen effect on him. Over time, he begins to develop genuine paternal feelings for Griamore, something he initially refuses to acknowledge even to himself. This internal conflict between his demonic mission and his growing humanity becomes a central aspect of his character.
Fraudrin's primary motivation throughout the story is to revive the Ten Commandments and restore the demon clan to power. He acts as the secret architect of the first major arc of the series, manipulating Hendrickson into becoming a power-hungry tyrant and orchestrating the chain of events that leads to the breaking of the seal that imprisoned his comrades. After successfully freeing the other commandments, he seeks to prove his worth to them, acutely aware that he is only a substitute and viewed as the weakest link. However, deep within, his experiences among humans begin to create doubts about his mission.
His key relationships are crucial to understanding his role in the story. His relationship with Dreyfus is one of parasitism and conflict, as the two share a body and Dreyfus's consciousness constantly fights for control. His relationship with Griamore is the most transformative. Pretending to be the boy's father for ten years, Fraudrin finds himself genuinely caring for Griamore, learning something about love and selflessness that he was never meant to understand as a demon. He also holds a deep respect for the original Gowther, whom he served in the past and whose position he now occupies. His interactions with Meliodas are defined by hatred and conflict, as Fraudrin is responsible for the death of Meliodas's lover and becomes a target for the former demon commander's wrath.
In terms of development, Fraudrin undergoes one of the most significant changes in the series. He begins as a purely villainous figure, a monster hiding in human skin, manipulating events for the sake of demonkind. As the story progresses, his enforced time as Dreyfus slowly humanizes him. By the time the final battle for Liones arrives, Fraudrin is no longer certain of his purpose. When he is expelled from Dreyfus's body by the returning holy knight Zaratras, he engages in a final confrontation with the resurrected Meliodas. Overwhelmed and outmatched, he decides to self-destruct to destroy the kingdom and take his enemies with him. Yet, when he hears the voice of the young Griamore begging him to stop, he fully realizes the depth of his love for the child. In a moment of genuine selflessness, this demon who never possessed a commandment chooses to abandon his suicide attack and accept death, allowing Meliodas to kill him so that Griamore and the people of Liones may live. After his death, Griamore builds a small tombstone in his memory, acknowledging the complex bond they shared.
Regarding his abilities, Fraudrin possesses a magical power known as Full Size which allows him to grow his body to enormous proportions, becoming as large as a mountain and gaining immense strength and destructive range. While powerful against large groups or weaker opponents, this ability makes him slower and presents a larger target against stronger foes. While possessing Dreyfus, he also has access to Dreyfus's own magical abilities and techniques, including powerful sword-based attacks. He also has a possession technique that allows him to enter and control the bodies of others, and he makes use of common demon abilities such as regeneration and dark energy attacks.
