Description
Gilthunder is a prominent character from the anime The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments. He is a young man of 21 years who stands 185 centimeters tall and serves as a Diamond-ranked Holy Knight of the Kingdom of Liones. The son of the former Great Holy Knight, Zaratras, he carries the weight of his father's legacy and tragic death throughout the story. He is also the nephew of the Holy Knight Dreyfus and the cousin of his fellow knight, Griamore. As a child, Gilthunder was known as a timid and pure-hearted boy who greatly admired Meliodas, the captain of the Seven Deadly Sins, often being called Gil-boy by him and training in swordsmanship under his guidance. In the present day, he is a handsome young man with distinctive pink hair and light blue eyes, tasked with serving as the bodyguard to the kingdom's first princess, Margaret, who is also his secret lover.

On the surface, Gilthunder initially appears as a cold, ruthless, and cruel antagonist, a stark contrast to the kind boy he once was. He seemingly harbors a deep hatred for the Seven Deadly Sins, whom he publicly blames for the murder of his father. This facade of being a mercenary knight who shows no hesitation in causing suffering is a carefully constructed act. In truth, Gilthunder learned the reality of his father's murder ten years prior: that the true enemies were the Holy Knights Hendrickson and Dreyfus. However, this knowledge put him in an impossible position. The scheming mage Vivian discovered the truth and subsequently took Princess Margaret hostage, using her as leverage to force Gilthunder into compliance. To protect Margaret, he was forced to outwardly obey the corrupt powers and play the role of their loyal soldier, all while being constantly surveilled by Vivian's magical familiar. Throughout this decade of deception, he never abandoned his true loyalties, secretly sending a distress signal to Meliodas using a charm taught to him in his youth.

His primary motivation is the protection of Princess Margaret, a promise that has defined his life and forced him into his antagonistic role. Following this is his desire to avenge his father and clear the name of the Seven Deadly Sins, whom he never stopped admiring as heroes. Despite his forced betrayal, he still looks up to Meliodas and seeks to live up to the example set for him in his childhood. After the corruption in Liones is exposed and Margaret is freed through Meliodas's actions, Gilthunder sheds his false persona and openly joins forces with the Seven Deadly Sins to fight against Hendrickson, the man truly responsible for his father's death.

Gilthunder shares several key relationships that define his character. His bond with Meliodas is foundational, transitioning from a pupil-mentor relationship to one of forced enmity and finally to that of a grateful ally and friend. His romance with Princess Margaret is the central pillar of his actions, as his love for her is the reason he endured years of servitude to her captors. He is also part of a close-knit trio of friends with fellow Holy Knights Howzer and his cousin Griamore, with whom he shares a much more relaxed and genuine camaraderie. His relationship with his uncle, Dreyfus, is complex, as Dreyfus is both a family member and one of the men responsible for his father's death, a betrayal that adds a deep layer of personal conflict.

Throughout the series, Gilthunder undergoes significant development. He begins as a mysterious and seemingly villainous figure but is revealed to be a tragic hero forced into a terrible situation. His arc is one of atonement, as he seeks to make amends for the suffering he caused while under duress. After reclaiming the kingdom, he sets out on a journey of redemption with Howzer and Griamore to learn the truth and better himself. His development includes a training trip to the Druids' village, where he breaks his old, rigid habits and increases his power level from 1970 to 2330. He evolves from a knight bound by form and orders into a more flexible and powerful fighter who can act on his own convictions. His story continues beyond the Holy War, as he eventually marries Margaret, becomes a father to a son named Chion, and continues to serve as a protector of the kingdom in the sequel series, The Four Knights of the Apocalypse.

Gilthunder's notable abilities all revolve around his innate magic, named Thunderbolt, which grants him complete command over lightning. He can generate and control lightning for a variety of offensive and defensive purposes. On offense, his techniques include the Iron Hammer of the Thunder Emperor, which summons a devastating, pinpoint lightning strike, and the Pursuit of the Lightning Beast, which fires homing lightning bolts shaped like beasts. He can also imbue his sword with lightning to enhance its cutting power and deliver a powerful Thunderclap Slash. For defense and mobility, he can create the Heavy Armor of the Thunder Emperor, cloaking his entire body and creating a shield of lightning that protects him from all directions while also boosting his speed. His power is immense for a human Holy Knight, and his mastery over his element makes him a formidable combatant, capable of taking on demonic threats and matching powerful opponents.
