Description
Escanor is a major character in The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments, known as the Lion’s Sin of Pride and recognized as the most powerful member of the Seven Deadly Sins. He is a human male, approximately 40 years old, with a deeply unusual personal history.

Escanor’s background is one of tragedy and isolation. He was born as a prince of the Kingdom of Talim. In his youth, his magical power, Sunshine, manifested uncontrollably, causing him to severely injure his older brother. Terrified of his strength, his own family and the people of his kingdom branded him a monster and exiled him. After years of wandering and being treated as an outcast, he was eventually discovered by Merlin and Meliodas, who recruited him into the ranks of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Escanor’s most defining characteristic is his dual personality and physical form, which are directly tied to the position of the sun. His magical power, Sunshine, governs this radical transformation. During the night, he is physically frail, short in stature, and possesses a personality that is timid, polite, self-deprecating, and lacking in confidence. In this state, his combat power is so low that he is weaker than an average human. However, as the sun rises, a dramatic shift occurs. With the coming of daylight, Escanor grows tremendously in size and muscle mass. His personality simultaneously becomes the complete opposite of his nocturnal self: he transforms into an incredibly arrogant, boastful, and prideful individual who views all others as beneath him. As noon approaches and his power reaches its zenith, this arrogance becomes absolute, yet he maintains a poetic and refined manner of speaking. He once stated that he cannot feel hatred for anyone weaker than himself, only pity.

Escanor’s primary motivation and central emotional anchor is his love for his fellow sin, Merlin. He holds her in the highest regard, viewing her not as a test subject or a companion, but as the sun itself, which illuminated his previously dark and lonely life. He composes poetry in her honor and is entirely devoted to her, accepting any treatment from her, even being considered a test subject, without resentment. Beyond his love for Merlin, his motivations are rooted in pride and camaraderie. He considers it a true honor to fight alongside his comrades in the Seven Deadly Sins and treats his role as the group’s ultimate powerhouse with a sense of duty.

His role in the story, particularly in The Revival of The Commandments, is that of a secret weapon and an unstoppable force. He is often introduced at critical moments to turn the tide of battle against seemingly invincible foes. He is the character who can defeat enemies that the rest of the group cannot handle, such as the Ten Commandments members Galand and Melascula, and later Estarossa. His presence on the battlefield typically signals a decisive shift in power.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. His relationship with Merlin is the most significant; his love for her is his core driving force, even though it appears largely unrequited from her side. He shares a deep bond of respect and friendship with Meliodas, the captain of the Sins, who accepted him when no one else would. He also shares a unique connection with the Archangel Mael, as it is eventually revealed that the power Sunshine is actually a Grace that had originally belonged to Mael before it abandoned him and chose Escanor as its new host 3000 years later.

Escanor undergoes subtle but meaningful development. While his daytime arrogance remains a constant, his underlying humanity and vulnerability become more apparent. He accepts his strange condition and the limited life expectancy that comes with wielding Sunshine, viewing his eventual death not as a tragedy but as a fitting end for one who had the privilege of standing alongside his fellow Sins. His final battles show a shift from pure, prideful power to a conscious choice of self-sacrifice for the sake of his friends.

Escanor’s notable abilities are all facets of his magical power, Sunshine. This power causes his strength, speed, and durability to increase exponentially as the sun climbs higher, with his power level rising by five points every second during the morning. At the stroke of noon, for exactly one minute, he enters his ultimate form known as The One, becoming a virtually invincible incarnation of power capable of overwhelming the Demon King himself. He wields a large, one-handed golden axe named Rhitta, which is immensely heavy, as its primary weapon. Rhitta has the ability to charge and store his excess magical energy, preventing his heat from damaging his surroundings and allowing him to release it in powerful slash attacks. Among his signature techniques is Cruel Sun, where he creates a miniature, sun-like sphere of blazing magic energy that can be hurled at opponents with enough force to evaporate an entire lake. His power is such that even in a spiritual form, his mere presence can incinerate a demon’s soul.
