Description
Kanbe is the in-game persona of Koizumi Fujimoto, a character in the anime Recovery of an MMO Junkie who bridges the gap between the online and real worlds. In the real world, Fujimoto works as a clerk at a convenience store, a setting where he has brief but significant encounters with the protagonist, Moriko Morioka. Within the fantasy MMORPG Fruits de Mer, he plays the character Kanbe, a shopkeeper who is a member of the same guild as Moriko's male avatar, Hayashi, and Yuta Sakurai's female avatar, Lily.
In terms of personality, Kanbe is depicted as a mature, observant, and sensible individual who serves as a grounded presence within the often convoluted social dynamics of the guild. Unlike other characters who become preoccupied with the perceived discrepancies between online personas and real-world identities, Kanbe maintains a pragmatic and respectful view of the game. He values the peace and harmony of the guild above all else and respects that each player engages with the game for their own reasons and in their own way. While he is not above playful teasing, such as when he gently ribs Moriko about the misunderstandings surrounding Hayashi's identity, his actions are consistently guided by a desire to avoid unnecessary drama and protect the comfortable environment the players have created together.
Kanbe's primary motivation stems from his role as a stabilizing force within the guild and his unique position as someone who is aware of the real-life identities of his fellow players before they are revealed to each other. Because he knows that his coworker Yuta Sakurai is the player behind Lily and that Moriko is the player behind Hayashi, he becomes acutely aware of the romantic tension and miscommunications developing between them. His actions are often driven by a desire to gently guide the situation without overstepping, though he occasionally engineers awkward situations, such as pointedly questioning both Moriko and Yuta about their in-game genders, to prompt them to think more honestly about their own feelings and assumptions.
In the narrative, Kanbe functions as a key confidant and a catalyst for the main characters' development. He is one of the first people Moriko feels comfortable talking to about her love for MMOs in real life, a significant step for her. More importantly, his awareness of the truth allows him to offer cryptic but important advice, such as warning Moriko not to ask Lily for too much real-world advice, knowing that Lily is actually the shy Yuta. When Moriko ignores this and asks Lily for dating advice, it is Kanbe who helps navigate the resulting confusion, acting as a bridge between the two characters and saving them from their own social awkwardness. His presence ensures that the plot can advance without the prolonged, painful misunderstandings that might otherwise occur.
His key relationships are primarily with Moriko and Yuta. With Moriko, he interacts both as a friendly convenience store clerk and as a guildmate, offering her support and a non-judgmental ear. With Yuta, he shares a real-world connection as coworkers, giving him insight into Yuta's personality outside of the game. His development is not as central as the main protagonists, but he serves as a static, reliable figure whose main change is a growing investment in the happiness of his two friends as he watches their offline relationship slowly begin to mirror their online friendship. Regarding abilities, Kanbe does not possess supernatural powers; his notable ability is his keen social perception and his rare position of knowing almost all the crucial secrets of the main characters, which he uses to maintain order and subtly encourage positive outcomes. His in-game avatar is characterized by green eyes and green hair styled up.
