Description
Kae Serinuma is the central protagonist of her story, a high school student whose life dramatically changes following an unexpected personal crisis. Before this event, she is a self-identified fujoshi, a term for female fans of boys' love media, which features romantic relationships between male characters. Her greatest joy comes from observing the boys around her and imagining them in romantic scenarios with each other, a hobby she shares with her similarly inclined best friend, A-chan. Physically, she is initially portrayed as overweight with a simple fashion sense, including round glasses, a look that reflects her primary focus on her otaku interests rather than her own appearance.

The catalyst for the story is the death of her favorite anime character, Shion. Plunged into a deep state of grief, Kae locks herself in her room for an entire week and refuses to eat. When she finally emerges, the shock and starvation have caused a rapid, drastic weight loss, transforming her into a conventionally beautiful and slender girl. This physical transformation, however, does not alter her core personality. She remains fundamentally a kind, cheerful, and caring individual who often goes out of her way to help others, a trait some have likened to a compulsion to be a hero. Her positive and honest nature was present even before her weight loss, as she was friendly with her classmates and known for her encouraging attitude.

Kae's primary motivation is not to find romance but to indulge her passion for boys' love fiction. This creates the central irony of her situation. After her transformation, four handsome boys from her school who had previously paid her little attention suddenly become romantically interested in her. They are the athletic and friendly Yusuke Igarashi, the brash Nozomu Nanashima, the calculating underclassman Hayato Shinomiya, and the gentle upperclassman Mutsumi Asuma. While these four begin to compete for her affections, Kae is largely oblivious to their feelings, finding their attention awkward and overwhelming. Instead of seeing them as potential boyfriends, she would much rather fantasize about them dating each other, a desire she refers to when she wishes they would "kiss him, not me".

Kae's role in the narrative is that of an unwilling heroine of a reverse harem, a situation she never wanted. She navigates the chaos of group dates and competitive advances while desperately trying to hide her fujoshi nature from the boys, fearing they will find her strange. Despite her best efforts, her otaku tendencies frequently surface, leading to humorous and embarrassing situations. Over time, she bonds with each of the boys, developing friendships with them as she grows more accustomed to their presence. Her key relationships evolve from her viewing them as characters for her ships to recognizing them as genuine friends who, to her surprise, often accept her otaku lifestyle without judgment, particularly Mutsumi, who had been kind to her even before she lost weight.

Throughout the story, Kae shows a degree of character development as she slowly becomes more aware of the complexities of real-life romance. Initially, she is completely unable to distinguish between her fantasies and genuine emotional interactions, describing herself as someone who "doesn't know about the feelings or love". She is famously clueless, failing to notice the boys' obvious romantic intentions even when they are directly expressed. This obliviousness is gradually challenged, leading her to eventually develop a deeper, more personal understanding of love, separate from her fictional boys' love ships. Her final romantic choice reflects a preference for a partner who valued her for who she was all along, not for her transformed appearance.

Beyond her defining trait as a fujoshi, Kae has several notable abilities. Despite her sedentary otaku lifestyle, she demonstrates surprising physical strength even in her original heavier form, and her athletic performance improves significantly after losing weight, often drawing on knowledge from sports anime rather than practical experience. She is also a skilled seamstress, able to create cosplay outfits from scratch. Her defining "ability," however, is her capacity for vivid, elaborate fantasy, which forms the basis of both her inner life and the series' primary comedic element.
