Description
Gran Torino, whose real name is Sorahiko Torino, is a retired Pro Hero and a pivotal figure in the history of the My Hero Academia world. He is best known as the personal mentor who trained Toshinori Yagi, the hero known as All Might, and later served as a crucial teacher to All Might's successor, Izuku Midoriya. Physically, Gran Torino is an exceptionally short and elderly man, standing at only 120 centimeters tall, with a scrawny build, deep wrinkles, short spiky grey hair, and a neatly trimmed beard. His hero costume consists of a monochrome full-body suit, a yellow cape, thick yellow gloves and boots, a belt with the letter G on it, and a dark domino mask. This appearance stands in stark contrast to his younger days, when he was tall, handsome, and well-built, nearly as tall as All Might's muscular hero form.

At first glance, Gran Torino appears to be a forgetful and senile old man. He frequently asks people he meets, "Who are you?" and often calls Izuku by the wrong name, usually "Toshinori," All Might's real name. He acts clumsy, such as tripping and falling in a pool of ketchup and sausages, leading others to believe he is suffering from dementia. However, this is largely a façade meant to test and provoke reactions from his protégés. In reality, Gran Torino is highly intelligent, perceptive, and incredibly sharp-minded. He possesses a dry, sometimes cynical wit and a no-nonsense attitude. As a mentor, he is brutally tough, strict, and does not hesitate to scold or physically strike his students for their mistakes. His training methods are notoriously harsh, having instilled a deep-seated fear in All Might that causes the Symbol of Peace to tremble even as an adult. While stern, Gran Torino is not without praise; he readily commends his students when they show genuine improvement or insight, proving he is a fair and effective, if terrifying, teacher.

Gran Torino's motivations are largely rooted in his past and his dedication to the legacy of One For All. He is a close friend and ally of Nana Shimura, the seventh wielder of One For All, who passed on the power to a young Toshinori Yagi. It was at Nana's request that Gran Torino took on the role of training All Might in how to fight and control his overwhelming power. Following Nana's death at the hands of the villain All For One, Gran Torino's primary purpose became to help All Might defeat this great evil and to support the future generations of One For All users. He has little interest in public recognition or typical hero activities; he states that he only maintains his hero license for the freedom it gives him to use his Quirk for a single purpose, which is to aid in the fight against All For One and his legacy. This purpose eventually extends to guiding Izuku Midoriya, who he sees as Nana's legacy living on.

Gran Torino plays the essential role of the mentor who refines the raw potential of the protagonists. He first appears when he requests Izuku Midoriya for a week-long work study. Recognizing the flaws in Izuku's self-destructive method of using One For All, Gran Torino teaches him the fundamental technique of letting the power flow through his entire body constantly, rather than focusing it in a single limb for an attack. This lesson is the critical first step toward Izuku mastering his Quirk. Throughout the story, Gran Torino participates in major battles, including the hideout raid to rescue Bakugo from the League of Villains and the all-out war against the Paranormal Liberation Front. He engages directly with powerful villains like All For One and Tomura Shigaraki, proving that even in old age, he can contend with the highest level of threats. During the Paranormal Liberation War, he is gravely wounded by Tomura Shigaraki, which forces him to retire from active combat and be hospitalized. Even in this diminished state, he continues to offer wisdom and support, such as giving his yellow scarf to Izuku, a token of his enduring faith in the young hero.

His key relationships define his actions throughout the series. His bond with Nana Shimura is one of deep respect and loyalty, as he was her trusted comrade and confidant. This relationship is the foundation for his decision to train All Might and later protect Nana's grandson, though he also carries the guilt of not having done more for her family. The relationship with All Might is that of a harsh but deeply effective teacher and a sometimes-overwhelmed student. All Might holds immense respect for Gran Torino, but his memories of Gran Torino's brutal training are a clear trauma for him. With Izuku Midoriya, Gran Torino initially adopts the same tough-love approach, but a clear sense of pride and affection develops as he watches Izuku grow. He becomes a grandfatherly figure who provides not only combat training but also crucial emotional and tactical guidance, particularly after the fall of All Might.

Gran Torino's development sees him transition from a legendary but retired figure who lives in a dilapidated house to an active and vital player in the final struggle against evil. His most significant moment of change occurs when he is nearly killed by Shigaraki. This near-death experience removes him from the front lines, shifting his role from active combatant to strategic advisor and a source of emotional support for the younger heroes. His survival and subsequent retirement mark the end of an era, passing the full weight of the future onto the next generation. Throughout the series, he evolves from a mysterious and frightening old man into a deeply respected and beloved, if still slightly intimidating, patriarch of the hero community.

Gran Torino's notable abilities center on his Quirk, Jet, which allows him to expel pressurized air from holes in the soles of his feet. This ability grants him incredible speed and agility, enabling him to fly through the air, ricochet off surfaces, and perform high-speed kicks with devastating force. The propulsion is fueled by his breath, meaning the power and duration of his movement are directly linked to his lung capacity. Despite his advanced age, he is recognized as one of the fastest heroes alive, capable of moving faster than the eye can follow and knocking out multiple villains in a single instant. He uses his tremendous speed to enhance his physical strikes, with his signature move being a powerful jet-propelled kick strong enough to incapacitate villains like the high-speed Nomu or members of the League of Villains. However, his age is a limiting factor; his bones and organs are weaker, and overusing his Quirk can strain his body, primarily his back. In his prime, his power and speed were even greater, making him an extraordinarily formidable hero.
