Description
Arataka Reigen is a self-proclaimed psychic and the founder of the Spirits and Such Consultation Office, where he mentors and employs Shigeo Kageyama. Despite boldly calling himself the "Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century," he lacks any authentic supernatural abilities. Instead, he relies on charisma, manipulation, and practical skills such as massage therapy rebranded as "Sorcery Crush," photo editing dubbed "Graphic Exorcism," and throwing salt as a theatrical flourish. He occasionally improvises martial arts moves with mixed results. Reigen’s personality blends shrewd opportunism with a strict no-harm policy; he readily deceives clients for profit but insists on resolving issues through practical services and even offers refunds for poor results. He possesses high social and emotional intelligence, often dispensing insightful life advice. This is central to his mentorship of Mob, where he emphasizes that psychic powers do not confer superiority, advocating humility, ethical behavior, and the validity of fleeing conflict. Initially exploiting Mob’s powers while paying minimal wages, Reigen becomes genuinely protective, risking his life against threats like the Claw organization despite his powerlessness. His dependence on Mob leads to emotional volatility, including a manipulative outburst when Mob forms independent friendships, causing a temporary rift. A televised exposé of his fraud deeply affects him, particularly his fear of losing Mob’s respect. Reconciliation with Mob—who affirms Reigen’s core goodness—solidifies their bond. Reigen consistently rejects the idea that psychic abilities grant inherent superiority, maintaining that all people are equal and must contribute positively to society.
