Description
Mary is a mummified priestess who serves as one of three undead guardians raising the protagonist, Will, in the ruined City of the Dead. In her mortal life, she was a high-ranking devotee of Mater, the earth mother goddess. After dying alongside her husband Blood and their comrade Augustus during an earlier battle against the Demon High King, she entered into a contract with Stagnate, the god of the undead, to return as an undead in order to guard the seal that held the High King. This pact caused her body to become a preserved mummy with golden hair and green eyes, and it placed a divine curse upon her: whenever she prays to Mater, holy fire burns her, a sacrifice she endures without complaint for the sake of her duties.

Mary’s personality is gentle, nurturing, and selfless. She shows unwavering devotion to both her goddess and her adopted son, placing Will’s well-being above her own suffering. She is patient and kind, teaching Will about faith, the proper conduct of prayer, and the use of healing magic. She also instructs him in domestic skills necessary for survival, such as cooking and cleaning, and provides the emotional warmth that balances Blood’s boisterous combat training and Gus’s stern magical lessons. Her primary motivation is to raise Will to be a virtuous and capable person, hoping to atone for the failure she and her companions felt when they could not fully defeat the Demon High King in their original lives.

In the story, Mary acts as Will’s foster mother and spiritual guide, shaping his moral foundation and his understanding of the gods. Her role is essential in the first season, where she, Blood, and Gus prepare Will for the outside world and ultimately for the confrontation with Stagnate. She appears in the second season, The Lord of Rust Mountain, primarily in flashbacks or as a lingering presence in Will’s memories, continuing to influence his decisions through the lessons she imparted. Her key relationships include her husband Blood, with whom she shares a deep bond of mutual love and duty, and Augustus, the ghost sorcerer who completes their trio. Her most important bond is with Will; she loves him as a true mother and sacrifices her own peace to ensure he grows up surrounded by care.

Mary undergoes a quiet but significant character arc. She spends centuries in undeath, faithfully guarding the seal and raising Will, all while bearing the pain of her burning prayers. When Stagnate attempts to claim her soul, Will, now a paladin of the goddess Gracefeel, fights to free her and Blood. With the intervention of Mater, they are released from their contract, and Mary finally passes on peacefully, her soul allowed to rejoin the cycle of life. Her development highlights themes of sacrificial love, redemption, and the value of a finite existence.

Notable abilities include her knowledge of divine healing magic and her deep understanding of the earth goddess Mater’s teachings. She is also able to endure immense physical pain without faltering, a testament to her willpower. While not a combatant, her spiritual support and wisdom are crucial to Will’s growth, and her memory continues to guide him as he faces the challenges of the Rust Mountains and beyond.
