Description
Irisdina Bernhard holds the rank of Hauptmann, or Captain, and serves as the commanding officer of the 666th TSF Squadron, operating under the call sign Schwarzes-01. Born on September 8, 1959, she is a tall woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her reputation precedes her as a decorated war hero from the Poland retreat, where her exceptional leadership and tactical skills proved instrumental in the squadron's survival against the alien BETA. She leads by example, typically being among the first pilots to enter a dangerous fray, and her strategic mind is considered one of the primary reasons the unit continues to succeed against overwhelming odds.

Irisdina is the daughter of diplomats and the sister of Jurgen Bernhard. Due to their parents' frequent absence, she and her brother developed a very close bond during their childhood. In her school years, she was a charismatic natural idol, excelling in all her pursuits, a status she held until challenged by her rival, Beatrix Brehme. Despite the Communist party's restrictions on religious practice, Irisdina remains a devout Christian. In her rare moments of leisure, she enjoys collecting tea paraphernalia.

Her personality is often described as cold, earning her the nickname the Ice Queen. She is a hardened realist who believes that sacrificing a few hundred lives to save a million is a justifiable price. This philosophy is reflected in her strict priorities during combat: first the completion of the mission, then the safety of her team, and finally the protection of her own life. While she acknowledges the necessity of assistance from Western nations, she distrusts them, believing they intend to use East Germany merely as a shield. Her primary loyalty is always to Germany, and she can display extreme ruthlessness when the situation demands it, such as handing a traitor over for interrogation or authorizing artillery barrages that result in significant collateral damage. Despite the danger, she possesses the charisma necessary to forge unlikely alliances between disparate factions, drawing people to her ideals.

A significant and misleading aspect of Irisdina's public persona is the belief that she betrayed her brother to the Stasi, a secret police force, for personal gain. In truth, her brother was involved in a failed coup. To save his sister from being implicated, he instructed her to denounce him. This act was a deep cover, as Irisdina is secretly part of a conspiracy involving members of the National People's Army and the government to overthrow the Stasi. Her true goal is to strengthen East Germany into an independent world power, capable of reuniting with the West and standing free from Soviet control. She believes that by turning the 666th Squadron into an elite force and volunteering for dangerous missions like laserjagd runs and Operation Neptune, she can demonstrate East Germany's potential to the world.

Throughout the story, Irisdina's role is that of a mentor and a symbol. She builds the groundwork for a future rebellion, training her pilots so well that they can carry on her mission even if she is incapacitated. Despite her harsh exterior, she develops key relationships with her subordinates, particularly Theodor Eberbach, to whom she promises to respond to his feelings after the war. When Lise Hohenstein betrays the squadron, Irisdina remains resolute. She endures torture and isolation during captivity at the hands of Beatrix Brehme, refusing to reveal information about the rebellion. After her rescue, she continues to be a pillar of strength, even as she mourns the loss of her friends.

In her final moments, Irisdina bravely shields Katia Waldheim, standing in the way of the assassin Heinze Axmann and receiving a fatal gunshot wound. Ever selfless, she asks her comrades not to grieve, stating her part in the fight is over. Her last request is to witness a now-united Berlin, with the wall being torn down by the people on both sides. She dies peacefully in Theodor's arms, expressing relief that her dream of an undivided Germany has come to pass. Her legacy endures as a powerful symbol for the reformed government, the military, and the common people of both Germanies, being remembered as a legend who helped bring freedom from oppression.
