TV-Series
Description
Major Beatrix Brehme is a central figure in the Schwarzesmarken narrative, serving as a secondary antagonist and the commander of the infamous Stasi TSF guard battalion known as Werewolf. She is recognized as one of the best and most formidable tactical surface fighter pilots in East Germany, piloting a distinctive crimson MiG-27. Her primary function within the state apparatus is that of a ruthless and brutal hunter, tasked with tracking down deserters, anti-government dissidents, and those attempting to flee to the West.

Beatrix was the childhood friend and former military academy classmate of Irisdina Bernhard. The two shared a strong rivalry that began in their youth and evolved into a deeply adversarial relationship as adults. This connection is rooted in their shared past with Irisdina's brother, Jürgen Bernhard. In their school days, Beatrix was a transfer student from a prominent family, struggling with a cruel, overbearing father and suffering from depression. Initially introverted and anti-social, she was befriended by Irisdina. It was through this friendship that she met Jürgen Bernhard, with whom she fell deeply in love. Their relationship lasted for years, even through the hardships of the BETA war, and Beatrix, inspired by Jürgen, decided to become a TSF pilot. The eventual death of Jürgen, and what Beatrix perceived as Irisdina's subsequent abandonment, is the source of her deep-seated loathing and obsession with her former friend.

Personality-wise, Beatrix is a complex and contradictory figure. On the surface, she is often described as a bewitching and glamorous beauty, with a sensual smile and the demeanor of a playful flirt. She is ruthless, ambitious, and possesses a pronounced sadistic streak, often acting as a gadfly who enjoys watching others squirm, delivering threats or intimidating remarks in a sultry tone. This portrayal varies somewhat across different adaptations; the anime version leans more heavily into a depiction of a sadistic sociopath who delights in pain and death, while the visual novel and prequel material provide more depth, showing her disgust with torture and the atrocities she commits. Despite her cruelty, she values loyalty above all else and considers betrayal the greatest sin. Her own Werewolf battalion is absolutely loyal to her as a leader, not to the state, because she leads from the front and never asks her personnel to do anything she would not do herself.

Her motivations are driven by a utilitarian and cynical worldview. Despite her role as an enforcer of the East German state, she secretly hates the DDR, viewing it as a prison. She believes politicians are corrupt, indecisive, and self-interested, incapable of leading the country against the BETA threat. Her ultimate goal is not to preserve the current system but to reform the DDR from within, purging its corruption and transforming it into a military-secret police dictatorship. She believes such an iron-fisted regime would be the most effective bulwark against the BETA, allowing the rest of Europe time to evacuate. Consequently, she opposes democratization and German reunification, viewing them as inefficient and destructive to the defense of the Oder-Neisse front. Her belief that the ends justify the means allows her to rationalize her horrific actions as a necessary evil, even as she expresses guilt and acknowledges that her hands are stained with blood and that there is no glory waiting for her.

In the story, Beatrix acts as a major antagonist to the 666th TSF Battalion. She uses her authority and the Werewolves to hunt the rebels, displays keen interest in the conscript Katia Waldheim, and successfully plants an agent within the 666th to trap Irisdina. Her tactical brilliance is on full display during the NVA revolt, where she outmaneuvers General Franz Heim in a series of battles, becoming the spiritual pillar upon which the government forces rely. Her personal conflict with Theodor Eberbach culminates in a final duel. Despite her skill and advanced MiG-27 Aligator, her machine is heavily damaged after numerous engagements. Theodor ultimately defeats her using an anti-destroyer class diving technique originally developed by Beatrix and Irisdina. Trapped in her unresponsive TSF, she is killed when Theodor bisects her cockpit with a combat knife. Her death is a massive blow to loyalist morale, with many soldiers losing all will to fight.

As a TSF pilot, Beatrix is among the best in Europe. She is one of the first to field test next-generation Soviet machines like the MiG-23 and the MiG-27 Aligator. Her combat prowess is matched by her tactical and strategic acumen, making her a brilliant field commander. Her notable abilities are not just in piloting but also in leadership and manipulation, using her charisma to command absolute loyalty and her intellect to counter the moves of experienced generals. Her development is tragic; a depressed young girl who found love and purpose with Jürgen Bernhard transforms into a ruthless enforcer whose actions are driven by the grief of his loss and a desperate, brutal vision for humanity's survival, ultimately finding a grim relief in death.
