Description
Golden Darkness, often called by her nickname Yami, is introduced as the galaxy's deadliest assassin, a solitary living weapon created by the scientist Tearju Lunatique, who gave her the name Eve. She first arrives on Earth after being hired by an alien named Lacospo to kill the protagonist Rito Yuuki. However, after witnessing Rito's kind and genuine nature, she abandons the contract under the pretense of continuing her mission, using it as an excuse to remain on the planet she has grown to enjoy. She resides in her spaceship, the Lunatique, and is often seen wandering the streets of Sainan, spending her time reading books and eating taiyaki, the first food Rito ever offered her.

Initially, Golden Darkness presents a dispassionate, withdrawn, and stoic exterior. She is a girl of few words who maintains a calm and composed demeanor. Her most defining personality trait is her stated hatred of perversion, and she does not hesitate to use violence against anyone she deems obscene, particularly the perpetually unlucky Rito, whose clumsy nature frequently lands him in compromising situations. Despite her cold front, she is capable of great kindness, as seen in her growing friendship with Rito’s younger sister, Mikan Yuuki, who is one of the few people she openly calls a friend.

Golden Darkness's central motivation evolves from simply observing her target to a deep-seated desire to find a place where she belongs. Forced to be a weapon for most of her existence, she is drawn to the peaceful and warm atmosphere of Earth and Rito's home. She claims she will eventually kill Rito, but it becomes increasingly evident that this is a hollow threat meant to mask her growing attachment to him and her fear of abandoning her identity as an assassin. Her internal conflict forms the core of her role in the story, as outside forces attempt to force her to revert to her original programming.

Her role in the narrative expands significantly in To Love Ru Darkness, where she becomes a central figure. Having enrolled at Sainan High School after Mikan's encouragement, her new life is threatened by the arrival of Mea Kurosaki, a being who is revealed to be her genetic younger sister. Mea, along with the entity Nemesis, seeks to awaken Golden Darkness's hidden power, a prototype transformation program known as Darkness. This transformation is designed to turn her into an anti-planetary weapon of pure destruction, but due to a bug stemming from her repressed feelings for Rito, the program malfunctions; instead of giving her a thirst for destruction, it gives her an overwhelming obsession with perversion.

Key relationships define her development. Her bond with Mikan is a source of stability and normalcy, offering her a genuine friendship for the first time. Her feelings for Rito are complex; he is both the target of her frustration and the person whose kindness has begun to thaw her heart. She is shown to care for him deeply, eventually confessing her love after gaining control of her Darkness form. Her relationship with her creator, Tearju Lunatique, who becomes a teacher at her school, is also pivotal, as it uncovers the truth of her origins and her given name, Eve. Another significant relationship is with her rival, the assassin Azenda, whose schemes often force Golden Darkness to confront her past and fight to protect her new life.

Throughout the series, Golden Darkness undergoes significant development. She transitions from a heartless, solitary killer to a student capable of forming emotional bonds and experiencing love. The Darkness arc forces her to confront the violent purpose for which she was created. With the help of Rito, who uses an unconventional method to break the program's control, she rejects her destructive destiny and learns to accept her own emotions. Ultimately, she learns to master the Darkness form, transforming it from a symbol of her programming into a power she wields to protect those she cares about, culminating in her open confession of love to Rito.

As a transformation weapon, Golden Darkness’s notable abilities are vast. Her primary power is the Trans-ability, which allows her to transform any part of her body into weapons or tools. She most frequently uses her long blonde hair, shaping it into blades, drills, massive fists, and dragon heads. She can also grow wings for flight, transform her limbs into weapons, and even alter the size and shape of her own body. A notable weakness is her reaction to slimy substances, which can incapacitate her. Her ultimate ability is the Darkness transformation, in which she grows horns and gains the power to create wormholes, manipulate matter, and generate energy weapons capable of slicing planets in two. This form represents the full, terrifying extent of her power as a living weapon, which she eventually learns to control.
