Description
Lala Satalin Deviluke is the first princess of the planet Deviluke, the daughter of King Gid Lucion Deviluke and Queen Sephie Michaela Deviluke, and the older sister of twins Nana Astar Deviluke and Momo Belia Deviluke. Her story begins when she runs away from home to escape being forced into an arranged marriage with one of many suitors presented to her. She travels to Earth using a teleportation device and accidentally arrives in the bathtub of human teenager Rito Yuki. To avoid being taken back to her home planet, she hastily claims that Rito is the person she wants to marry, interpreting a confession of love he was making toward another girl as a declaration meant for her. Although she initially uses this pretense to remain on Earth, she eventually develops genuine romantic feelings for Rito as the series progresses.
In the original To Love Ru series, Lala serves as the primary female protagonist, but in To Love Ru Darkness, her role becomes more secondary as the narrative shifts focus toward her younger sister Momo and the character Yami. Despite this reduced prominence, she remains a constant and grounding presence in the household and continues to be involved in the comedic and romantic situations that arise.
Lala possesses a highly energetic, enthusiastic, and often childlike personality. She is impulsive and acts instinctively without fully considering the consequences, which frequently leads to chaotic or dangerous situations. She is also notably naive about human customs and culture, often misinterpreting them or accidentally causing trouble due to her lack of understanding. At the same time, she is deeply caring, generous, and compassionate, with a strong desire to make everyone around her happy. She has no sense of modesty, a trait stemming from her upbringing on Deviluke where she was always attended by maids, and she does not hesitate to be nude or partially clothed in public or around Rito. A key contrast within her character is that despite her childish and scatterbrained demeanor, she possesses a genius-level intellect and is considered one of the most intelligent beings in her galaxy. She is a prolific inventor, creating a wide array of gadgets and devices that range from useful to absurdly whimsical. However, her inventions rarely work as intended and often lead to comedic accidents or unintended perverted situations. Her greatest creation is Peke, a small robot that acts as her hair clip and can transform into her clothing.
As a member of the Devilukian and Charmian alien races, Lala possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability far beyond those of an ordinary human. A single punch from her can generate a shockwave and create craters. She has also displayed high resistance to physical harm and can consume extremely spicy food without any discomfort. Like all citizens of Deviluke, she has a long, thin tail ending in a heart-shaped spade tip. This tail is capable of firing destructive laser beams, but it is also a significant vulnerability, as female Devilukeans have highly sensitive tails that, if touched, can temporarily weaken her. She also has an enhanced metabolism inherited from her mother, which prevents her from gaining weight.
Her key relationships center on Rito Yuki, who is her fiancé and the person she genuinely loves, and her younger sisters Nana and Momo, with whom she is close and for whom she serves as a supportive older sister. She also has a friendly but sometimes rivalrous relationship with the androgynous alien Run, whom she knew as a child. Among her classmates on Earth, she interacts frequently with Haruna Sairenji, creating a love triangle dynamic with Rito. Throughout the series, Lala experiences emotional maturation, particularly in her understanding of romantic feelings and her sense of responsibility, as she learns to balance her royal heritage with her personal desires for freedom and love. Her motivations are consistently driven by a pursuit of happiness, fun, and the well-being of those she cares about, and she remains a catalyst for much of the story's comedy and heart.
