Description
Wakana Gojo stands at least 180 centimeters tall, with some sources noting 185 centimeters. He has short black hair, gray eyes, and a small mole near the outer corner of his right eye. Outside school, he typically wears a blue samue work outfit over a white undershirt with wooden sandals, often adding a white headband during crafting sessions. He later acquires a jinbei summer garment featuring distinctive yarn-knitted sleeves for ventilation.

Orphaned young due to his parents' accidental death, he initially lived with relatives but struggled with profound grief and isolation. His grandfather, Kaoru Gojo, introduced him to hina dolls during this time, sparking a deep fascination that helped him cope. A pivotal childhood incident involved his neighbor Nobara Aoyagi ridiculing his interest in dolls as "girly" and calling him a "freak" after he declined her play invitations. This experience instilled lasting trauma, leading him to conceal his passion and avoid social connections throughout his early schooling. He eventually moved in with his grandfather, training as a kashira-shi (doll head artisan) while maintaining solitary habits.

Initially withdrawn and submissive, Wakana believed his interests would alienate others. He avoided confrontation, allowing classmates to exploit him for tasks like solo classroom cleaning. His personality centers on meticulous craftsmanship, deep respect for traditional doll-making, and reluctance to use words like "pretty" unless genuinely moved. He exhibits shyness, particularly regarding intimate topics, often freezing or apologizing in embarrassing situations. However, he demonstrates intense focus during creative work, temporarily overcoming his inhibitions. Key traits include humility, selflessness, and a strong sense of duty, often prioritizing others' needs—such as managing his grandfather's shop during the latter's injury—over his well-being, risking exhaustion.

His development begins when classmate Marin Kitagawa discovers him sewing in a school handicraft room. Instead of mocking him, she admires his skill and requests help creating cosplay costumes, marking his first friendship. He initially doubts his ability to craft human-sized garments but accepts the challenge, applying his doll-tailoring expertise to cosplay. Early growth includes standing up to classmates who delegated cleaning duties unfairly, inspired by Marin's advocacy. His dedication surfaces when he exhausts himself to complete Marin's Shizuku Kuroe costume overnight, only to collapse upon learning the deadline was flexible—yet expressing relief for extra refinement time rather than frustration.

Subsequent experiences expand his social and creative horizons. Collaborations with cosplayers like Sajuna Inui and Shinju Inui introduce him to new techniques, such as eye-shape modification for character accuracy. Activities with Marin—beach visits, fireworks festivals, and cultural events—represent first-time social engagements, gradually reducing his reclusiveness. During the Rei Kogami arc, he participates in a school crossdressing pageant and publicly admits to crafting Marin's costumes, confronting his fear of judgment. His skills diversify beyond sewing to include wig styling, prop construction, and photography support.

Emotionally, Wakana evolves from seeing Marin as a muse to recognizing deeper feelings. A turning point occurs during Marin's Haniel cosplay (Mandate of Heaven arc), where her portrayal ignites unexpected jealousy. After she considers ending their cosplay partnership to prioritize his doll-making, he confesses his love in an anguished declaration, fearing a ruined friendship but receiving mutual affection. Their relationship culminates in marriage, with Wakana becoming a professional doll artisan and Marin a model.

Significant relationships include his grandfather, Kaoru Gojo, who nurtured his craft and provided stability after his parents' death. Marin remains central, her acceptance and encouragement fostering his confidence and social integration. Sajuna Inui, whom he accidentally saw nude during a fitting, becomes a trusted collaborator who admires his work; her sister Shinju relies on him for her inaugural cosplay. His cousin Miori maintains friendly contact.
