Description
Iris Chateaubriand is a core member of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, first appearing in the original Sakura Wars and continuing her role into Sakura Wars 2. By the time of the second game, she is eleven years old, having been born on July 5th, 1913, in the Champagne region of France. She is the only daughter of the wealthy and aristocratic Chateaubriand family, holding the title of Vicomtesse. Her background is marked by isolation, as she was born with extraordinarily powerful and unstable psychic abilities. Her parents, particularly her father, kept her confined to a single room in their castle, not out of malice but out of fear of her uncontrollable powers and a desire to protect her and others from potential harm. This lonely childhood changed when a representative from the Imperial Combat Revue, Ayame, approached her family and offered to bring Iris to Japan, where she could learn to control her abilities as part of the Flower Division.
In terms of personality, Iris is a complex blend of youthful innocence and surprising maturity. She is generally cheerful, well-mannered, and deeply caring, bringing a sense of sunshine and hope to those around her. Despite her wealthy upbringing, she is not portrayed as spoiled. A defining character trait is her fierce hatred of being treated as a child, and she will often and emphatically declare that she is not one. She can become grumpy or even truly enraged when her feelings are hurt or if someone speaks ill of her parents. While she is usually friendly and precocious, she also possesses a more somber and lonely side stemming from her past isolation, a dimension that is explored in various adaptations. Her primary motivation is to be seen as mature and capable, both in her personal life and as a valuable member of the team. She also holds a strong desire to protect her newfound family in the Flower Division, the first place where she has truly been accepted.
Iris's role in the story of Sakura Wars 2 is significant on several fronts. She is one of the first members to reunite with the protagonist, Ichiro Ogami, upon his return, reaffirming the team's bond. More critically, she plays a pivotal role in the story arc concerning Reni Milchstraße, a new, emotionally reserved member of the Flower Division. Through her persistent cheerfulness and refusal to give up on Reni, Iris becomes a key figure in helping the stoic soldier open up and later saves her from powerful enemy hypnosis, proving to be one of the major catalysts for Reni's change of heart. Her central relationships define her character development. Her feelings for Captain Ogami evolve from a childish, possessive crush in the first game, where she proclaimed herself his girlfriend, into a more mature admiration and respect, viewing him as an older brother figure. Even so, she maintains a precocious promise to marry him when she turns twenty. She shares a particularly strong sisterly bond with Sakura Shinguji, marked by mutual support and affection. Her most cherished, non-human companion is her teddy bear, Jean-Paul, whom she is almost never seen without. Her development culminates in a significant character event in her chosen story path, where she reunites with her parents. This resolution heals the rift caused by her childhood confinement, as they reaffirm their unconditional love for her, expressing remorse for their inability to help her directly and coming to accept her place with the Imperial Combat Revue.
Notably, Iris does not fight with conventional weapons. Instead, she is a powerful psychic whose abilities are central to her combat role. Her powers include telekinesis, teleportation, and the ability to psychically heal and repair machines, such as the team's Koubu armor. In battle, she uses Psionic Energy Amplifiers to focus her abilities, and her personal Koubu is colored yellow. Her spiritual power is considered the most potent within the Flower Division, making her the core of powerful spiritual barricade formations used to vanquish large groups of enemies. However, the very strength of these abilities is a recurring theme, as her powers are tied to her emotional state, and loss of control can have severe consequences, a fear born from her earliest childhood experiences.
