Description
Nana Suzuki is the main protagonist of the anime series Seven of Seven. She is a fourteen-year-old middle school student living in a traditional Japanese house with her eccentric inventor grandfather, Rokuzo Suzuki. Her parents work abroad in the travel industry, so she is largely raised by her grandfather. Nana is an ordinary girl in many respects: she has average grades, is slightly clumsy, and tends to be indecisive and shy, especially when it comes to expressing her feelings. Her most defining trait is her long-standing crush on her classmate Yuichi Kamichika, a kind and academically gifted boy. She has admired him for years but has been too timid to confess. This shyness and lack of confidence form the core of her personality at the start of the story.
The central event of Nana’s life occurs on Valentine’s Day, when she attempts to bake a chocolate cake for Yuichi. In her haste, she stumbles upon her grandfather’s secret experiment to create a crystallized rainbow. When she opens the microwave before the crystal has fully hardened, an accident causes a multicolored prism to split into seven different colored crystals, each hitting her and then emerging as a separate physical being. Nana is thus split into seven versions of herself: her original self and six extreme exaggerations of different personality facets. These six include a hot-tempered tomboy, a laid-back easygoing girl, a perpetually smiling optimist, a crybaby, a flirtatious charmer, and an intellectual brain. While the other six Nanas each represent a single exaggerated trait, the original Nana retains the balanced but timid core personality.
Nana’s primary motivation throughout the series is to confess her love to Yuichi and gain admission to the same elite high school he plans to attend. This goal forces her to study hard despite her mediocre academic record, and to learn to cooperate with her six other selves, who often cause chaos and compete for Yuichi’s attention. The existence of the other Nanas must be kept a secret from most people, which adds further complication to her daily life. The crystals the Nanas possess grant them superhuman abilities such as flight, super strength, and super speed. They also allow them to transform into a set of hero costumes called the Nana Rangers, which they use to help others discreetly. Each crystal is associated with a color; Nana’s crystal is blue.
Nana’s relationships are central to the story. Her crush on Yuichi Kamichika is the emotional anchor; Yuichi treats all seven Nanas with equal kindness and never shows favoritism, which both encourages and frustrates her. She also has a close bond with her grandfather, who is supportive and often unwittingly involved in the chaos. Initially, she is bullied by three classmates who also like Yuichi—Megumi, Erino, and Motoko—but over time they become her friends. The most important dynamic, however, is with her six other selves. They are literally parts of her own personality, so she must learn to accept and manage these aspects, often finding that their differences can be strengths when they work together.
Throughout the series, Nana undergoes significant development. She gradually becomes more assertive and confident, both in her studies and in her interpersonal relationships. The split forces her to confront her own weaknesses—like her indecisiveness and fear of rejection—by seeing them exaggerated in her counterparts. She learns to balance her responsibilities with the chaos caused by the others, and she gains a deeper understanding of herself. Her motivations shift from pure romantic pursuit to include a genuine desire to grow as a person and to help her other selves find their place. By the end, she becomes a more well-rounded and determined individual, ready to face the future.
Notable abilities: While Nana herself has no innate powers, each of the seven Nanas wields a prism that grants them superhuman physical abilities. They can fly at high speeds, lift heavy objects, and move with superhuman agility. Additionally, by using the prisms, they can don the Nana Ranger costumes, which enhance their powers and allow them to operate as a team of superheroes. Nana’s role is often the mediator and leader, trying to keep the group focused on their goals. Her most distinctive ability is her capacity for empathy and growth, which allows her to unite the six disparate aspects of her personality into a functional whole.
