Description
Ichirō Ōgami is a central protagonist in the Sakura Wars series, including his appearance in Sakura Wars: The Movie. He was born on January 3, 1903, in Tochigi, Japan, and stands 176 centimeters tall. As a young man, he was chosen to head the Imperial Combat Revue’s Flower Division after proving himself capable during a test of a Koubu prototype at sea. Initially holding the rank of ensign, he is later promoted to lieutenant junior grade.

Ōgami is a man of his own distinct personality, not merely a silent self-insert for the audience. He is characterized by a blend of bravery, sincerity, and a quiet sense of pride in his work, whether on the battlefield or managing the theatrical side of the division. He is known to be serious, especially when it comes to protecting others, but also possesses a humorous and silly side, willingly participating in games or holding a ring of flowers made by a child without shame. He is not portrayed as an invincible hero; he is capable of being seriously injured in battle and is not afraid to admit when he is afraid. His actions are driven by a desire to protect the happiness of those he loves and to preserve peace, rather than by a simple sense of duty or orders. He is also shown to be willing to break professional rules for the sake of his friends, such as fighting guards to help a comrade avoid an unwanted arranged marriage.

In both the games and the film, Ōgami serves as the captain of the Flower Division, a role that places him in a leadership position over its diverse and often headstrong members. His primary responsibility is to lead the division in battle against supernatural threats while also supporting their theatrical performances. His key relationships are with the members of his squad, particularly Sakura Shinguji, the main heroine, with whom he shares a close bond. He also has significant relationships with other members like Sumire Kanzaki, the aristocratic star of the troupe, and Maria Tachibana, the division's original leader whom he replaced. Over the course of the series, Ōgami develops from a promising but untested ensign into a proven and inspirational leader, earning the trust and respect of his team through his actions and unwavering dedication. A notable part of his development includes receiving the Shintou-Mekkyaku, one of the four spiritual swords, from an injured superior officer.

Ōgami is a highly capable fighter whose notable abilities include mastery of kenjutsu, specifically a twin-sword style, and he wields two ōtachi medium-length Japanese swords as his primary weapons. He is a skilled pilot of various Koubu units, the steam-powered mecha used by the Combat Revue, and his personal unit is predominantly white. His combat prowess is matched by his strong spiritual power, which is necessary to pilot a Koubu effectively.
