Description
Miranda is a Milosian and the leader of the Black Bats, a rebel organization fighting to reclaim Table City from its Amestrian and Cretan occupiers. She appears only in the film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos. Raised in the Valley, the impoverished slum where the Milosian people were forced to live after their homeland was invaded and divided, Miranda grew up under oppressive conditions and became determined to end her people’s suffering. She is always calm and collected, even in highly tense situations, and takes her role as leader very seriously, viewing the safety of her fellow Black Bats and all Milosians as her personal responsibility. She is not swayed by pride or guilt when pursuing her goal; she openly admits that the Black Bats are little more than a nuisance to the occupying powers and that their chances of winning independence are nearly impossible, yet she continues to do everything in her power to find a way to succeed. Her pragmatism extends to being willing to consider morally questionable methods, including using the legendary Sanguine Star—a red glowing stone of immense power that she believes can control a massive heat source called Magma—even after learning it is a Philosopher’s Stone that requires human sacrifice. She does not dismiss the option and is prepared to sacrifice willing Milosians and even allow enemy soldiers to be used to create it.

Miranda’s role in the story is that of a determined resistance leader who brings together the main characters in the fight for Milos’s freedom. She first appears leading a surprise attack on a train that she believes is transporting captured Milosians, only to find it is a trap. Undeterred, she and her group then attack the prison where Julia Crichton is being held, attempting to rescue her. After Julia and Alphonse Elric fall into the Valley, Miranda demands custody of Julia and later meets the man posing as Ashleigh Crichton. She brings this Ashleigh to the Black Bats’ secret base, where she explains their mission to reclaim Milos and asks for his help. She also welcomes the Elric brothers and shares the history of the Valley and the Milosian struggle. Miranda reveals the Black Bats’ plan to use the Sanguine Star, and even after Edward and Alphonse warn her that creating it would require countless human lives, she does not entirely rule it out. She thanks them for their help and allows them to leave in peace. Subsequently, she secures the supposed Ashleigh’s cooperation and orchestrates an assault on Table City. During the battle, the man she trusted, who is actually the villain Atlas in disguise, fatally stabs her in the back, using her blood to activate the transmutation circle that creates the Sanguine Star. As she lies dying, she learns of the betrayal of her subordinate Alan and the true identity of her attacker. In her final moments, she musters the strength to stab Atlas with a knife, though the wound is not fatal. Atlas retaliates by impaling her with an icicle created through alchemy. With her last breath, she urges Julia to run and survive. After the conflict ends, Julia and another Milosian mourn her loss.

Key relationships include her bond with Julia Crichton, whom she tries to protect and lead; her trust in the impostor Ashleigh, which proves fatal; and her respectful interactions with the Elric brothers, whom she thanks for their aid even while disagreeing with their stance on the Philosopher’s Stone. Her development is limited by her early death, but she remains unwaveringly committed to her cause until the end. Miranda does not possess alchemical abilities herself; her notable capabilities lie in her leadership, tactical acumen, and skill in directing guerrilla-style attacks, including the use of gliders to launch aerial assaults. Her calm demeanor, sense of duty, and willingness to sacrifice herself for her people define her character.
